Journal 10:

I found Gagnes nine events of instruction to be very interesting and useful with teaching
students to get them engaged in the material and learn it for the long term. I feel like one of the
most important events is the 1st event which is gaining attention. I think that educators need to
make sure that before introducing a lesson or topic, they need to gain students attentions. I think
even though the book uses from great examples of getting students attention, I think there are
more fun ways of getting students attention especially at the grade school level by like playing
music, its a fun and creative way to get students attention. Event 2 of Gagnes events of
instruction is also very important because if students feel like the material they are learning is not
going to affect them or they arent going to use it in real life, they might not give their full
information or take the information seriously and store it into their long term memory. Giving
students a preview or discussion about the outcomes of the lesson will get them interested and
drawn into learning the material. Throughout my years as a student sitting in the classroom, I
always liked it when my instructors used event 3 to start off a lesson by asking us to recall
information. It always boosted my eagerness to learn and it allowed me to retrieve some old
information and made it easier for me to connect the new material to the materials that I have
already learned. Steps 4-6 of Gagnes events of instruction are really interesting, but they do not
stick out to me as much as some of the other events. I found steps 7, 8 and 9 to be very important
and feel as if sometimes they are not fully emphasized and not always used after a lesson. I think
it is very important for an instructor to give its students important because it allows the students
to correct their mistakes. Also, I think that just telling students that their answers are wrong does
not provide sufficient feedback; I think there needs to be more feedback as into pointing out
where the student answered the question wrong or provide students with the correct answers and
as to why that was the correct answer to the question. I think that providing feedback can also
come after assessing performance because it can help students not store wrong information into
their memory before the 9th stage of Gagnes event: Enhancing Retention and Transfer occurs.

I chose this website because it goes into detail about the events that are in Gagnes nine events of
instruction. I like how the website looked at the nine events in different classroom settings like
regular enrollment courses, larger courses and even online/hybrid courses. Even though this
website seems to be geared to more of a collegiate setting; many high-school educators can get
ideas to help their students. Also, it shows that these theories can go past the K-12 classroom and
be useful at the college level as well. It gives you ways to start and also provides with additional
articles and websites to visit to get more information about Gagnes nine events of instruction.

In this study, the researchers incorporated Gagnes nine events of instruction into a learning
lesson which was then taught to students using the steps and series of Gagnes nine events of
instruction. In this study, the lesson and instruction was in a university setting. Students were
give pre- and post- tests to measure the outcome and survey their opinions about Gagnes nine
events of instruction being used in their lesson. It was found that students had positive reaction
towards attention, interaction and presenting the content which showed that Gagnes nine events
of instruction could be used in instruction to help students. I liked this study because it allowed
showing the application and results of using Gagnes nine events of instruction in an actual
classroom, but I feel as if the study should have focused on not letting students know that they
were been taught through Gagnes Nine Events of Instruction and also included a control group
and see which of the two groups, experimental and control performed better. Also, I think some
quantitative data/results could provide a more in depth look at the success of Gagnes nine events
of instruction.
