Annapoorna Shloka

Annapoorne Sada Poorne,
Shankara Prana Vallabhe,
Jnana Vairagya Sidhyartham,
Bhiksham Dehi Cha Parvati.

Hey , Mother Annapurneswari,
Who is the darling of Shankara,
Please give me alms,
Of knowledge and renunciation,
For me forever.

Matha Cha Parvati Devi,
Pitha Devo Maheswaraha
Bhandava Shiva Bhaktas Cha,
Swadesho Bhuvana Trayam.

My mother is Goddess Parvati,
My father is God Maheswara,
My relations are the devotees of Shiva,
And my country is the universe.

Goddess Annapurna Mata is the Hindu goddess of food and cooking. Annapurna is empowered with the ability to supply food to an
unlimited amount of people. Annapurna means in Sanskrit 'Anna' means food and 'purna' means complete; together the term
Annapurna signifies nourishing with food to the fullest. Food is one of the basic necessities of life, and it is no wonder that we say
'Annam Brahma', food is God. Mata Annapurna is an incarnation of Goddess Parvati who is the wife of Lord Shiva.

Physically, Annapurna is described as holding a golden ladle adorned with various kinds of jewels in her right hand and a vessel full
of delicious porridge in her left. She is seated on a throne. In some depictions, Lord Shiva is shown standing to her right with a
begging bowl, begging her for alms and also asking to Annapurna to provide unlimited food that people can get energy and achieve
the knowledge and enlightenment.

Mata Annapurna is also the symbol of divine aspect of nourishing care. Cook worship this goddess to give good taste in food and
enjoy people very much. People believe that if we cook the food by holiness then mata annapurna will help us to make our food
tasty and energy full.

Annapurna has many names. The Annapurna Sahasranam presents her one thousand names and the Annapurna Shatanama
Stotram contains 108 of her names. She is variously described as:
She who is full, complete and perfect with food and grains
She who gives nourishment
She who is the strength of Shiva
She who is the grantor of knowledge
She who takes away all fear
She who is the Supreme welfare
She who manifests truth and efficiency
She who is beyond Maya
She who is the cause of creation and dissolution
She who is adi sakthi

Eating food is a holy ritual, a yajna. It should not be performed during moments of anxiety or emotional tension. Food has to be
considered as medicine for the illness of hunger and as the sustenance of life.
Do not waste food; annam brahma, Food is God. You can eat till your hunger is appeased. There is nothing wrong in it. There are
many who are starving. There are many who do not have enough food to eat. Therefore, you should not waste food. It is a sin to
waste it.
