Goddess Annapurna Mata is the Hindu goddess of food and cooking. Annapurna is empowered with the ability to supply food to an unlimited amount of people. Annapurna means in Sanskrit 'Anna' means food and 'purna' means complete; together the term Annapurna signifies nourishing with food to the fullest. Food is one of the basic necessities of life, and it is no wonder that we say 'Annam Brahma', food is God. Mata Annapurna is an incarnation of Goddess Parvati who is the wife of Lord Shiva.
Physically, Annapurna is described as holding a golden ladle adorned with various kinds of jewels in her right hand and a vessel full of delicious porridge in her left. She is seated on a throne. In some depictions, Lord Shiva is shown standing to her right with a begging bowl, begging her for alms and also asking to Annapurna to provide unlimited food that people can get energy and achieve the knowledge and enlightenment.

Eating food is a holy ritual, a yajna. It should not be performed during moments of anxiety or emotional tension. Food has to be considered as medicine for the illness of hunger and as the sustenance of life. Do not waste food; annam brahma, Food is God. You can eat till your hunger is appeased. There is nothing wrong in it. There are many who are starving. There are many who do not have enough food to eat. Therefore, you should not waste food. It is a sin to waste it.
