I. Introduction

The Challenges of meeting the Blood Transfusion Requirements World-Wide
and the Need to Develop
Blood Drive, Proposal

I want to help others, is a phrase commonly used by donors that give blood. There are
15.7 million blood donations collected. Thirty-eight percent of the United States populations
are eligible to give blood, but only 10 percent actually donate, that is about 9.2 million donors
each year .(American Red Cross). Around the world there are about 107 million donations most
of these donations from high income countries, this leaves out many low income countries who
are not able to get adequate blood donations, for transfusions.

All the donated blood received has to go somewhere that is where blood transfusions
come in. Blood Transfusion is a common procedure where blood is delivered through an
intravenous (IV) needle and transferred through blood vessels (National Health, Lung and Blood
Institute). There are many illnesses that require the transfusion of blood such as sickle cell
anemia, cancer, surgeries and injuries, and other diseases. The three components of blood that
can be transferred are red blood cells, platelets and plasma. In the U.S. transfusions and the
specific component to be given is determined by the patients need. Donors are screened for
infections like Hepatitis B and C, Syphilis or HIV/AIDS but these stringent screening guidelines
are not standardized worldwide thus some transfusion recipients may receive blood tainted
with an infectious virus.(U.S. Food and Drug Administration). This is higher in low income and

developing nations. (Medline Plus) The risk of receiving an infection from transfusion is low, but
still is a risk that needs to be addressed globally, especially in low income and developing
nations. The FDA believes that one in 450,000 to 660,000 blood donations are infected with
HIV/AIDS. In low income countries 43% of donated blood is tested for Hepatitis B and C.
HIV/AIDS accounts for 80,000 to 160,000 infections annually.
When donating blood it is very important to eat healthy meals. Iron is a very important
mineral that is needed for healthy blood, without Iron blood cannot be donated. It is not wise
to eat foods that are rich in fat and oils because the blood cannot be tested for infections and
the blood will not be transfused. Donors should always drink lots of fluids that are non-alcoholic
before and after donations and should have no drugs like aspirin in their system. It is also very
important to get good rests with little intense physical activity and to avoid eating lots of
proteins.
In order to put my research question into action I along with two classmates we will
host a Blood Drive in collaboration with the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center. My objective is to
encourage as many people in Shapstown International School to volunteer to donate their
blood to help save the lives of others. The donated blood will be transfused to patients who are
in need of blood. My capstone will challenge me to communicate effectively with donors,
sponsors, volunteers and the Gulf Coast Center. In my capstone project I will be challenged to
make the donation process run donations run effectively.
My Capstone Project will address all the pillars of Asia Society. I will Investigate the
World by identifying and developing a position on how different parts of the world address

blood donation and transfusions, Recognizing Perspectives by explaining and understanding
why these regions may do transfusions and donations a certain way, Communicating Ideas by
communicating with my peers and audience verbally and with technology and Taking Action by
helping to host a blood drive at S.I.S that will supply safe healthy blood to patients in dire need.

The primary essential Question of my capstone project is, Why are there challenges in
meeting the blood transfusion safety requirements World-Wide and what can be done to
improve safety in transfusions?

III. Measuring Project Results
I will do my best to help about 390 patients with the blood donations being held at our
school. I will keep track of the number of people who have the potential to benefit from this
blood drive by documenting all active donors then multiplying that by 3 because for every unit
of blood 3 lives can be saved (American Red Cross).
In order to ensure that my outcome is effective I will visit the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center
to observe the process to prepare donated blood for transfusions. The outcome I outcome I hope to
achieve from this blood drive is 103 donors to save about 309 lives in my local community. With this
blood drive I am to learn how blood transfusions can become safer in many countries that find it
difficult.
My target populations are the people who take part in delivering blood to patients, those that
draw blood from patients, and those that take part in the storage safety of the donated blood. The
target population would also be my school because they are the ones donating their blood and it would
be beneficial for them to know how this process is performed.
IV. Form

My capstone project will take the form of a research paper on my findings based on my
primary question. My research paper will written after my proposal is passed so that I could
help host the blood drive at S.I.S.

After my proposal is passed and I have done an adequate amount of research my blood drive
will be put into action. I will present my findings to my peers at school, my sponsors and the
Gulf Coast regional Blood Center who is sponsoring the blood drive at S.I.S.
