Multilevel Topic/Theme: Hypothetical Situations
Objectives Listening Students will be able to recognize the second conditional in a song. Students will also be able to understand and answer questions using the second conditional. Speaking Students will use the second conditional to ask and answer questions. Reading Students will be able to recognize the second conditional in text. Writing Students will write a paragraph using the second conditional. Bridging What background knowledge do the students already have? Students have already learned about the first conditional. They also know how to ask questions using the first conditional. Some students may have already learned or have some familiarity with the second conditional from previous classes.
What will you do to activate or link students prior knowledge or experience to upcoming content? I will begin class with a warm-up activity to review the first conditional. I will ask students how to form the first conditional and write the construction on the board: if-clause (if + present simple) + result clause (will/may/might/should/etc.). I will elicit examples from students and write these on the board. I will emphasize that this conditional is used to talk about real possibilities.
I will then lead the students in the conditional chain game. I will give the students a statement using the first conditional (example: If Karen goes to Las Vegas, she will lose a lot of money). I will then call on a student to turn the result clause into an if-clause and then create a new conclusion. The next student would turn that result clause into an if-clause and, again, create a new conclusion. For example: Teacher: If Karen goes to Las Vegas, she will lose a lot of money. Student 1: If she loses a lot of money, she will cry a lot. Student 2: If she cries a lot, her eyes will be very swollen. Student 3: If her eyes are very swollen, she will be embarrassed.
This activity will continue until everyone has had a chance to speak at least once or twice and shown proficiency with the first conditional.
Engagement with New Material What will you do to engage students in the active learning of the new material? I will then introduce the second conditional. I will explain that we use it to talk about the future (like the first conditional), but that it is used to talk about unreal possibilities. I will ask if anyone knows how to form the second conditional. Again, I expect that some but not all of my students will already know how to do this. I will first ask for examples of the second conditional, and I will elicit the construction from students and write it on the board: if-clause (if + past simple) + main clause (would/could/might/etc.). If no students are familiar with the second conditional, I will write two or three example sentences on the board and ask if they can determine the formation rule.
In order to practice this skill, I will utilize the Beyonce song If I Were a Boy and ask students to complete a worksheet. Some students will likely already be familiar with this song. I will explain that both were and was can be used in the second conditional without changing a statements meaning.
Students will listen to the song once without pausing. They will listen to it again, but I will pause after each section to give them time to work. We will then listen to the song a third time without pausing. We will discuss the answers as a class.
What will you do to ensure that all students are engaged? I will walk around the room while the students complete the listening exercise to ensure that they stay on task. If there is too much confusion or the students seem bored, I can end the task early. I can play the song while pausing after each line, so that students have time to complete the assignment before moving on. Application What opportunities will you provide students to practice and apply their knowledge/skill to meet the objectives for this lesson? To apply to other contexts? Depending on time, I will then introduce a writing task. Students will have 10-15 minutes to write a paragraph titled If I Were a Boy/Girl. They will follow the model of the Beyonce song and utilize the second conditional.
They will then share their work with a partner or in small groups. Volunteers can share their work with the entire class.
If there is not enough time in class for this activity, it will be assigned for homework
I will remind students that the second conditional is used to discuss unreal situations. I will ask if any students think they can ask a question using the second conditional. I will write correct examples on the board. For example: What would you do if you if I didn't return after the class break?
I will then introduce the final task of the day: What would you do if
Students will receive a card with a hypothetical situation on it written in the present tense. They will walk around the classroom and find a partner. They will then ask their partner a question using What would you do if + hypothetical situation on card. Students will be reminded that the hypothetical situation should be in the past tense. Partners should answer the question using the second conditional and compete sentences. After both partners have asked and answered questions, they will exchange cards and find new partners. This activity will continue for about 10 minutes or so until there is 5 minutes remaining in the class. Assessment How will you assess their learning of the objectives? I will collect the students If I were a boy/girl paragraphs and read and grade them. I will also walk around during the conversation cards activity to ensure that students both understand the task and are able to properly use the second conditional. Closing How will you help students recap the learning and link it back to the original purpose of the lesson? Before the end of class, I will review how to form the first and second conditionals. If theres time, we will play the conditional chain game using the second conditional. I will also remind students to complete their homework if we do not have time to complete the writing activity in class. Lastly, I will explain that we will continue to work with conditionals in the next class and talk about different structures and words that can be used. Technology If applicable for your context and your lesson, how will you meaningfully integrate technology into your lesson?
At my school, technology is not easily accessible because the classrooms are not provided with screens, projectors, or computers. Although we have access to projectors and computers, it is often easier to just use the materials in the classroom. For this lesson plan, I will play the Beyonce song on my laptop or computer and use speakers if necessary.
