Discipline and the Learning Environment
Discipline is very necessary in the classroom. Under Loco Parentis, the teacher is to act
as the parent of the students in his or her classroom. That means that we as teachers are to
protect the students from danger and the best way to do that is by clearly using classroom
procedures, rules, and discipline from day one. Disciplinary action when a procedure or rule is
not followed correctly helps students to know where the boundaries are. When the students
know how to correctly do what they are supposed to do, they are able to enjoy an environment
that is more conducive to learning. This environment will ensure that no matter what the
assignment, the teacher will not have to worry about unnecessary distractions.
Professional and Ethical Demeanor
I will display an heir of professionalism no matter the situation. The students and
parents will know that I am a professional in my occupation. They will know that I am a
professional by the way I dress. I will always make sure to dress in a manner that shows I feel
my career is important. I will always show professional behavior in the classroom and at all
school events. I will keep relationships with students, parents, and my peers strictly
educational. I will always keep the parents of students informed on what is going on in the
Kendrick 2

classroom whether good or bad. I will commit to stay in constant communication with parents
and students on grading and behavior.
Rules:
#1. AS INDIVIDUALS AND AS A CLASS WE WILL BE RESPECTFUL TO ALL WHO ENTER THE
CLASSROOM.
#2. We will follow all of the classroom procedures.
Consequences:
#1. Non-verbal warning
#2. Verbal warning and restatement of rule #1 by the entire class
#3. Meeting with student immediately after class
#4. Parent contact
#5. Administrative action
(The consequence level for each student will be noted on a clipboard and changed out weekly)
Recognition:
If a student does not receive a verbal warning all week he/she may get a candy out of the candy
drawer.
Contract:
Kendrick 3

As a member of this classroom, I will do my part in ensuring that all other members have a safe
environment that encourages learning. I will do so, by following all of the classroom rules and
procedures that have been given to me both verbally and non-verbally. I will also make sure not
to inhibit learning or instruction for any member of this classroom. I understand that not
following the previous statements, classroom procedures, and classroom rules will be a breach
of this contract and will be enforced according to the ladder of consequences that have been
given both verbally and non-verbally.
By signing this contract, I agree to all of the statements above.
Students name:__________________________
(This contract will be signed by me on the wall)
Procedures:
Entering the Classroom: When the tardy bell rings, students should be sitting in their
assigned seat. (Seat in a Seat per Dr. Hank Bounds) Students in violation of this procedure will
be assigned a tardy according to school policy. Students should also be working on bellringer by
the time the tardy bell rings. If you are absent from class, you are responsible for obtaining
assignments and notes when you return. Worksheets and any additional handouts can be
obtained from the make-up folder. (Time allotted for make-up work according to attendance
policy) Pencils should be sharpened during the time before the tardy bell rings.

During Class: Raise your hand to be addressed or to ask a question. If you run out of lead or
your lead breaks during class just raise the pencil to where I can see it and I will trade you a
sharpened pencil. Trash can be thrown away at the end of class.
Dismissal: When the bell rings, students may then pack up. Students are to make sure
classroom textbooks are in their assigned place. All chairs are to be placed back under the
desks. If a student traded a pencil during class, the student may then trade their pencil back.
Turning in Work: All bellringers, notes, exit tickets, worksheets, and homework are to be
placed in one binder to be graded at the end of each unit unless told to turn in at another time.
All work on notebook paper will have your name above the date in the top, right-hand corner of
the page. All assignments for the week will be posted on the board. (This will include any page
numbers assigned.
Prevention of Misbehavior
Through the consistent use of my procedures and rules in the classroom and
maintaining professional behavior at all times I will effectively be able to prevent the factors
that cause misbehavior in the classroom. Students will never have to question what is required
of them. If a student knows what is expected of them then they will feel less compelled to
cause disruptions. If a student does cause disruptions it is usually nothing against what I am
doing as a teacher. Students may sometimes have bad days. That is why I placed so many steps
in the discipline ladder before any administrative action is taken. If need be, I will be able to
meet with the student after class and try to get to the root of the problem. If the problem is
something that I am doing wrong, the student and I can take the steps necessary to solve the
Kendrick 5

problem. This seems to be the most effective way to understand what the students need and
also the most effective way to build a classroom environment that is conducive to learning.
