Real or Likely situations
• 1st Conditional

If clause Present Simple


Main clause Future (will + infinitive)
Ex.:
If you calm down, you will explain it better.

If clause Main clause


Examples:
• I will eat popcorn if I go to the cinema.

• If you fall, I won’t be able to catch you!

• If it rains, we’re going to get wet.

In the 1st conditional after if (clause) we use the


present simple and in the main clause we use the
future.
Unreal or Imaginary
situations
• 2nd Conditional

If clause Past Simple


Main clause would + infinitive
Ex.:
If you didn’t eat, you would be sick.

If clause Main clause


Examples:
• If I spoke french, I would go to Paris.

• I wouldn’t touch that if I were you.

• If you became a millionaire, you might be unhappy.

• If you fell, you would hurt yourself.

In the 2nd conditional after if (clause) we use the past


simple and in the main clause we use would/might/could.

situations
• 3rd Conditional

If clause Past Perfect


Main clause would have + past participle
(conditional perfect)
Ex.:
If I had learned French, I would have gone to Paris
If clause with you.

Examples:
• If you had not eaten all those sweets, you wouldn’t have got
tummy ache.

• I would have eaten popcorn if I had gone to the cinema.

• If John had studied more, he would have got better marks.

• If you had saved some money, you wouldn’t be so hard up.

In the 3rd conditional after if (clause) we use the past perfect


and in the main clause we use would have + past participle.
