SPRING 2013

Did you Know?...
Did you know that early colonists grew
tomatoes purely for decoration?
Did you know tomatoes are actually a
fruit?!!

History
Green onions date back very early in history and have
been found featured in paintings in tombs and on cave
walls.
Tomatoes are believed to have originated from Peru.
Basil dates back thousands of years ago recorded in
ancient Egypt.
Harvest Planning and Preservation

*Green onions are ready to harvest when tops start to
fold over and start to loose their bright green color.
*Green peppers need to be picked when they are large
and green.
*Basil leaves should be snipped frequently. Flower
heads should be removed to keep basil leaves growing.
Pest Control and Plant Success
CCContro
l
and P lant
The nasturtiums and radishes,
which are a natural pest control for
plants, will help limit the bad bugs
from invading your garden.
Mulching around the plants after
they germinate will help with weed
control and water evaporation.
Green onions and basil are great
companion plants for tomatoes.
They give off plant odors that keep
insect pests away from tomatoes.
Marigold planted with green
peppers keep flea beetles and
aphids away.
Tomatoes can grow to 3-5 feet tall.
Plan on keeping your tomatoes in
the center of the garden and plant
the other smaller herbs and veggies
around the tomatoes.
