Oral Tradition and the Spread of Christianity Lesson


Objectives:
1. Study the changes that took place in Christianity after the crucifixion of Jesus
2. Examine the concept of an oral tradition and the effect of an oral tradition on
the spread of information
3. Review the Second Temple era in Jerusalem, the events of Jesus arrest, and the
incentives for his followers to seek a scriptural explanation for his death
4. Examine the changing geographical climate of the Christian group and this effect
on the spread of information


Understandings:
1. Students will understand the concept of an oral tradition
2. Students will understand the differences in wealth and literacy in the Roman
world and how this affected the spread of Christianity
3. Students will understand the psychology of why followers of Jesus went
searching for explanations for his death
4. Students will understand context in which Paul developed Christianity


Assessment:
1. Students will take a quiz on the important geographical regions and cities in the
Roman Empire around the year 70 CE. The quiz will have 10 blank spaces. This
will help give them a context for studying the spread of Christianity.
2. Students will turn in an exit ticket.


Instructional Approach:
(HW Due: Study for Map Quiz. Students were given a practice quiz with all of the
potential locations on it.)
1. Map Quiz, 8 minutes
2. Class discussion: defining Christian, reviewing the life and death of Jesus,
examining how Christianity might have gotten to Paul. Using a timeline and a
graphic organizer on the SmartBoard, 14 minutes
3. Game of Telephone: Students will remain relatively quiet and spread a message
from person to person, 3 minutes
4. Analysis of Game of Telephone and the difficulties of oral tradition. I will play a
clip of American slave songs recorded in 1930s to emphasize this, 5 minutes
5. Class discussion: We will make a contemporary analogy (New England Patriots
losing the Super Bowl) to the events of Jesus death. How do people cope with
their hero meeting a gruesome downfall? How does this lead to a reinterpretation
of the heros life, 15 minutes
6. Map: Examination of the geographical spread of Christianity in the context of its
changing audience and beliefs. , 5 minutes
7. Exit ticket: In your own words, please explain how the crucifixion of Jesus, led to
the formation of a religion in which he was considered to be the Jewish messiah
over the course of 50 years?, 5 minutes
