What is JUMP?
A non-profit organization located in Toronto
dedicated to helping children succeed at, and enjoy, learning math.
Began as a tutoring service for children having trouble with math.
Using guided discovery, has developed curricular material for K-8.
Has received extensive grants from Canadian and US sources.
Belief is that math is a gateway subject: as students develop confidence and a
track record in math, there is an across the board academic improvement.
Why JUMP?
Organization reflects goal of seminar:
insights and studies from Cognitive Science should guide improvements and
experiments in teaching.
While the material developed is limited to K-8,
hope: similar material is developed for 9-12
JUMP has extensive grants from governmental and non-governmental sources.
Can they provide faculty development workshops at CUNY?
