Sing the songfor the studentsas you move bilateral

your hands. Ask the students to copy your move-
ments. Repeat. Ask the students to sing the song as
they move.
Move to the Song Form
Tell the students that the words ofthe songindicate
that there are two main ideas or two sections ofthe
song. Thefirst partOfthe songis aboutdoingsome-
thing "this-a-way" and "that-a-way,"and the second
part ofthe song is about going marching. Ask the
students to move to macrobeats with their heels and

they move and determine the number of musical
ideas they hear. Some students may hearfour; some
students may hear two. Ask individual students to

the class to imitate those students. Discuss the tonal
and rhythmic similarities and differences among the
musical ideas demonstrated by the students.
Explain to the students that short musical ideas are
labeled phrases and larger musical ideas are labeled
sentences. The phrases within each sentence ofthis
song begin similarly. Howevt:r, the phrases within
eachsentenceenddifferently. Bothsentencesendon

that songs that have twomain musical ideas are said
