Work Sample Business Operations Research Project
For a large portion of the winter of 2013-2014, I participated in a project where I was put
into a team of 3 people. We then chose a business, researched it, and formulated a plan to meet a
specific objective. The 2013-2014 objective for the project was to rebrand the business
which means to basically create a new image for the business. Our group chose Deadrich Real
Estate a local San Leandro business, and took on the task to rebrand it. Rebranding the
business included having to research brands, the business, and different methods of promotion.
After conducting our research, we put the plan into action and learned how to use the tactics
effectively.
Through the Business Operations project, I was able to acquire many skills. These skills
focused in information, media, and technological literacy. I was able to understand how to access
information and analyze it to create the best plan possible. Within a business, there are multiple
legal and ethnical issues that need to be addressed. In the project, I reviewed these issues and
made sure none of the information used was falsely published or unreliable. The project included
utilizing media for promotion and research of the business. I was able to understand media
messages, why they were constructed, and how to use them as a form of promotion. Along with
that, I was able to understand that certain demographics and groups of people will interpret a
media message differently.
The Business Operations Research project truly taught me about using technology. It
taught me about different uses of digital media such as managing information through charts,
tables, and graphs; integrating information to connect it to my plan; and applying technology for
research, marketing, organization, and communication.
While I truly gained experience in learning to use media, technology, and information;
the Business Operations project also taught me about many other topics such as economic,
financial, environmental, global and civic literacy. The Business Operations project allowed me
to understand economic situations and how they potentially affect a business. Along with that,
the project taught me how to balance budgets to make sure a business could operate. I was able
to understand the environment and how it is being affected. Other lessons and skills I have
learned from this project include how different cultures are assimilated into society and how laws
in the community works.
In the end, I couldve improved my report if I put more effort into revising the plan and
adding visuals. However, learning from these mistakes will improve my written reports the next
time. I have attained research skills and presentation skills from creating this written plan and
presenting it.
The Business Operations Research project taught me to use information, media, and
technology efficiently and how the world around me works. It showed me how to research and
how to effectively use my time and effort to create a thirty page paper that truly reflected the
writing abilities that I have. This project was presented to judges at the 2014 California DECA
State Career Development Conference and placed 2nd place out of 37 other reports. This project
qualified for the International DECA Career Development Conference, which took place on May
2
nd
May 7

in Atlanta, Georgia.
