Discovering Your Personality Style through the Color Quiz

Timing: Two 50-minute class periods (to account for activity transition time)
Objective: The lessons objective is to assist students in the exploration of personal
interests as it relates to career opportunities.
Materials: Enough copies of Color quizzes, activity questions and pre/post evaluations
for each 7
th
grade class. Butcher paper and markers will be needed for the Holland
stations. Tape is needed to attach posters to the wall around the room. Examples of
traditional and non-traditional occupations are necessary to place on corresponding
Hollands personality types.

Activity:
1. Administer pre-test to students. These questions include: What are your
strengths? What are some areas you struggle with? List three of your current
career interests. Allow about five minutes for them to complete. Collect the
evaluations and set aside.
2. Explain to the class that they will be taking a quiz to assess their personal
interests. Let them know the activity is designed to discover their own qualities
and characteristics. It will also give them the opportunity to gain understanding
of other personality styles. Take 10 minutes to explain and answer questions.
3. Distribute the quiz and give students around 15 minutes to answer all the
questions. The quiz requires students to compare the four boxes. They score
each of the four boxes in each
row with the correct number:
4= most, 3= a lot, 2=
somewhat, 1= least. When
they are finished, explain the
scoring process. Students
need to add each column and
write their score in the boxes
below that say Total Orange,
Green, Blue Gold score.
4. Once scored, distribute the
color spectrum description
sheet. Let students reflect on their color and look at the other colors attributes.
Take time to emphasize that the colors are used as a metaphor and there are no
good or bad colors. There will be variations of each color (End of Day 1).
5. Begin Day 2 by setting up your posters with career examples prior to class.
6. Give a small informational lecture about the six different Holland Personality
Types. Give a brief history of John Holland and the purpose behind his
categories. Present a summary of the Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social,
Enterprising, and Conventional personality types (15 minutes).
7. Distribute the activity questions.
Students are asked to get up and go
to the poster with the personality
type they identify with most. The
questions include: What are two
reasons you chose this Holland
group? Discuss with your group
what color you are. What do you
notice? Are there any people with
the same color? What is your
runner up color? What surprised you
about this activity?
8. Once groups have been formed,
have students fill out the activity
questions that were handed out
(about 10 minutes). End the activity
with a discussion any other questions and comments the students may have.
Ask them to fill out the post-evaluation (same questions as pre-test) that was
included on the same page as the activity questions (10 minutes).
