Pre-Advising Workshop
Before We Begin:
Meet with Your Advisor
Your assigned advisor will be listed on the
school website with your registration time.
Your advisor will help you decide which
classes you can or should take.

This session is meant to help you be more self
sufficient as a student, but does not replace
advising with your assigned advisor.

Moving from ABE to English 90
There are two ways you can move. Here is one:
*If you attend the ABE Transition class regularly,
have turned in work, and have a passing grade, your
instructor will recommend you for full Transition
Testing.
You must earn a minimum of these scores:
230 or higher on the CASAS reading test
8.3 G.E. or higher on the GMRT (academic
reading
70% or higher on the essay test.
Here is the second, the standard
way, to move to English 90
Take the computerized placement test (CPT)
at the Testing Center. Pay $25 for two
opportunities. Score 59 or above on both
reading and sentence skills.

Now that I know when I
am allowed to register,
how do I decide what
courses I should take?
Picking ClassesDegree Audit
*Do you want a certificate or degree?

If you are attending to get a degree or
certificate (and if you are getting financial aid
for a specific purpose), there are lists of
classes you must take. Start with Degree Audit
and see which classes you need to take and
how long it might take you.


*You can look at all the degree and certificate
requirements in Degree Audit.

*If you know what certificate or degree you
want to work on, it helps you figure out what
classes you need to take.

(But, pre-100 level pre-requisite courses like English 90 are
not listed. Add these courses to the course lists for degrees
and certificates.)

go directly toward this certificate
or degree.
Click on the Test
Scores tab.

This will show if
you have taken
the CPT, what
your scores were,
what level it
recommends you
take, or if youve
taken some
other test to let
you into the a
class.
Your Advisor can write
down which classes you
should take each quarter
and save them here.

Other advisors can look
at this and help keep
track of your goals.

It also reminds you about
which classes you need.

Some classes require
that you take other
classes first.
Now that I know what courses I
must take for a degree or certificate,
how do I find my classes
for next quarter?
First, determine which pre-college classes
you must complete. The CPT scores and
the classes you are currently taking this
quarter determine this for you.

Complete English and Math
Pre-requisites
Look at your CPT test scores to see what your
next step is or can you assume you will take
and pass the ABE Transition Math test?

* If you are in the ABE Transition English class,
assume will pass the English Transition Testing
to English 90. If you dont pass these tests,
then you can later register for ABE.
Complete Math Pre-requisites

You need to look closely at the
program you want to determine
which math classes to take. Program
requirements vary!

Navigation of College Resources
Students who will take English 90 are
required, as of Fall 2014, to take this 2
credit course about how to succeed in
college.
You can take this course in the first two
quarters, starting with the quarter you
first take English 90.
Fill out the Admissions
Form for SPSCC
Even though you are already a student,
you have to complete a form to begin
taking credit classes. If you dont complete
it, you might get an inaccurate tuition bill
for out of country tuition! Avoid the hassle
and do the form.

Now that you know what you have
to do and about what classes you
should or want to take, go to
Current Student
and find the item that reads

Plan My Schedule
Click on it.
Pick a Quarter

It shows you all the class choices
in all the schools locations. This
means the main campus, Hawks
Prairie, online, and other options.
Pick Your Classes
Click View Course List to
see all of the classes.
Pick Your Classes
Click on a letter, like Efor an
English class.
It moves you to the class code
(see the codes in blue below).
Pick Your Classes
When you click on the class code,
it is added to the list on the left.
Pick Your Classes
When you have picked all the
types of courses you want,
click Submit Selections.
Review Your
Options
Now you can see ALL of
the times that each course
is scheduled. You can also
see who is teaching the
class and which building it
is in. The seat openings
tells you if there is still
room in that class.

specific classes you want.
Finish by clicking Display My Schedule

is by time and day.

on the left side. This is
the number you use
to register for that

How do I now register for classes
now that I know what I want?
After meeting with your assigned
advisor to check your choices, wait for
your registration appointment time,
just after Advising Day.
To Register (hold a place in the classes you
want), go again to Current Students

This reminds you to
check when tuition is due
If a class you want is already full, you
will go on a waitlist. If other students
drop out of that class, you will get in.
You need to check the list often the
college will NOT contact you.

Wait List Strategy
What if a class was full and you put yourself on a
wait list? Check that list often to see if you have
been added to the class. Sometimes, when tuition
payments are due, about two weeks before a
quarter starts, there will be drops and your name
will be added to a class.
When you have registered, you have
to paybut not until about two
weeks before the new quarter.
If you dont pay your tuition, you will be
dropped from rosters and will no longer
be registered. Check each quarter for
specific payment due dates. Check with
Financial Aid, too, if you have been
awarded funds.
