May 8, 2014 Deliverable 2 Raster Based Analysis of Terrain Surfaces Ian Smith Director of Landfill Operations Town of Gumby Municipal Offices 2269 Niagara Rd. Gumby, ON, L0S E1O
Dear Mr. Smith, RE: GISC9312 Deliverable 2 Raster Based Analysis of Terrain Surfaces Please accept this letter as a formal submission of Deliverable 2 Raster Based Analysus of Terrain Surfaces for GISC9312, GIS Applications. The purpose of this deliverable is to utilize a three-dimensional analysis, using raster-based techniques, to determine the remaining volume of waste that may be placed in the landfill in order for it to reach its maximum capacity. Conservation Canada determined that there is 125 641.05m 3 of space left in the Gumby Landfill and that the landfill will reach maximum capacity between the years of 2021 and 2022. If there are technical difficulties regarding the documents or necessary questions regarding the documents, please contact me at your convenience at (289) 259-2790. Thank you very much for your time and I look forward to your comments and feedback regarding this deliverable.

The Town of Gumby Municipal Offices would like to know the amount of space the landfill has remaining for future waste (Smith, 2014). The Ontario Ministry of the Environment has provided contours for the maximum allowable elevation profile to use for analysis. GPS points, collected by Dewey, Rippem & Howe Consultants, were also utilized to observe how much waste is currently occupying the landfill. 2.0 Study Area The area of interest is the Gumby Landfill, located in Gumby, Ontario. Figure 1 displays the study area in further detail.

Kirsten Anderson 1208 Lansdown Drive Oakville, Ontario L6J 7N6 Phone (289) 259-2790 E-mail kirstenpatrice@gmail.com 3.0 Methodology The given contour lines were utilized to generate a surface that displays the maximum allowable elevation profile, as specified by the Ontario Ministry of the Environment. This surface is presented in Figure 2.
Figure 2: Maximum Allowable Waste Height at the Gumby Landfill Map The GPS points, provided by Dewey, Rippem & Howe Consultants , were used to generate the existing landfill surface (Figure 3). Technical Memorandum Raster Based Analysis of the Gumby Landfill 4 GIS Applications May 8, 2014
Figure 3: Existing Gumby Landfill Surface Map In order to determine the remaining depth of the landfill, the maximum allowable waste height surface was subtracted from the existing landfill surface (Figure 4). Figure 4: Remaining Waste Depth at the Gumby Landfill Map To better visualize the remaining waste depth at the Gumby Landfill, this surface was also displayed as a 3D image (Figure 5). Technical Memorandum Raster Based Analysis of the Gumby Landfill 6 GIS Applications May 8, 2014
Figure 5: 3D Image of the Remaining Waste Depth at the Gumby Landfill Map To find the volume of space the landfill has remaining for future waste, the volume change between the maximum allowable elevation profile and the existing landfill surface was calculated (Figure 6). Figure 6: Available Areas for Waste at the Gumby Landfill Map 4.0 Findings Looking at the information in the available areas for waste at the Gumby Landfill map in Figure 6, the remaining volume of waste that may be placed in the landfill before it reaches capacity is 125 641.05m 3 . There is 0.6 tonnes of garbage per m 3 , therefore there is 75 384.63 tonnes of space left in the Gumby landfill for garabage. Table 1 shows the amount of garbage (in tonnes) the Municipality of Gumby dumps into the Gumby Landfill every year.

Figure 7: Waste Generation Rate to the Gumby Landfill Graph Since the amount of waste generated by the Municipality of Gumby seems to level off after 2006, the accumulation of waste from 2006 to 2012 was averaged in order to determine how much waste will be accumulated in the future. Using an increase of 7795.714 tonnes/year, the amount of garbage that will collect in the landfill in the future was estimated (Figure 8).

Figure 8: Future Waste Generation Rate to the Gumby Landfill Graph Looking at Figure 8, the Gumby landfill will reach capacity between 2021 and 2022. 5.0 Conclusions and Recommendations Since portions of the waste within the Gumby landfill exceed the maximum waste elevation dictated by the Ontario Ministry of the Environment, Conservation Canada would suggest that the Municipality of Gumby redistribute the garbage within the landfill in order to meet the elevation requirements. Conservation Canada would recommend that the Municipality continues with, and improves, their recycling initiative so that the Gumby Landfill will be able to continue storing the Municipalities waste for a greater number of years. If the Municipality of Gumby needs to make use of the landfill after 2022, the Municipality should consider moving some of the waste to a different location, or creating a new landfill for future waste. Since the Municipality is aware of the time they have left until the landfill is full, they will have plenty of time to prepare for the Municipalitys future waste disposal. 0 10000 20000 30000 40000 50000 60000 70000 80000 90000 2010 2012 2014 2016 2018 2020 2022 2024 W a s t e
