Tamil Nadu Road Sector Project of Highways Department is being implemented by
World Ban assistance! "n this project as per the ad#ice of the World Ban two $d#ance Data
%ollection &'uipments were purchased from ()s Data %ollection *td!+ New ,ealand! Tamil
Nadu is second in "ndia to ac'uire this type of instrument after %entral Road Research "nstitute+
New Delhi!
This e'uipment will help in ac'uiring automatically road and bridge information-s lie
width of the road+ type of the surface+ condition of the surface+ geometrical details of the road+
location of the cul#ert and bridge+ etc! This e'uipment will collect accurately the pa#ement
condition data which will assist the Departmental &ngineers in re.structuring the road for true
condition with the rele#ant /eometric "nformation! The &'uipment consists of the following
instruments which are mounted in a #ehicle!
0! 1dometer to measure the distance 2 length of the Road!
3! D/PS instrument to collect the /lobal position of the Road Networ!
4! Bump. "ntegrator for measuring the roughness inde5!
6! *aser based longitudinal profilometer to deri#e roughness and longitudinal
profile!
7! *aser %rac (easurement System for measuring the trans#erse profile+ rut depth+
te5ture mean profile depth and #olume of pothole details!
8! Three #ideo cameras for reading the #isual condition of the roads+ road side
utilities+ furniture with in the right of way!
$ll the instrument ha#e been integrated with the R1(D$S e'uipment through rac
mounted computer inside the #ehicle with suitable software for online processing+ post
processing+ analysis and planning!
The e'uipment is supplied with one year warranty and two year $(% with the 9acility
(anagement &ngineers to facilitate the Departmental &ngineers with training while conducting
the sur#ey! The cost of the &'uipment is Rs!0!7 crore each! The entire length of road networ of
Tamil Nadu as follows is planned for data collection within three years with the 9acility
(anagement &ngineers! "t will be a repetiti#e process for collecting data of the roads!
