Lesson Title:
Goal Students will develop an understanding of Alexis Rockmans artwork by analyzing
his art and its implications on how genetic manipulation has affected our present
and future times. Students will be able to develop their own concepts on the
effects of genetic manipulation in our world, and express these ideas through
their own piece of art, using a similar style as Alexis Rockman.

Procedure
1. Students will participate in a VTS (visual thinking strategy) with a work of
art by Alexis Rockman, The Farm,
http://alexisrockman.net/projects/wonderful-world (first painting
displayed in row), as a whole class. Questions asked in VTS: Whats going
on in this picture? What do you see that makes you say that? What more
can we find? Discuss the genetic engineering message that Alexis Rockman
is trying to convey.
2. Watch a video describing works of art by Alexis Rockman.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wXagCFNhEIc Use this video as an
example of the type of video podcast students need to produce for their
own works of art. Point out artists commentary about The Farm at 2:04.
3. Students will go to Alexis Rockman website,
http://www.alexisrockman.net/work/projects/ and choose a work of art
that depicts genetic manipulation.
4. Examine and analyze the chosen work of art and write a description of your
analysis of the work of art. Post the picture of the work of art and your
description on the classroom website.
5. Create a work of art that is similar to Alexis Rockman. Students can take
pictures of the environment around the school, find images on the website,
and/or create drawings/paintings on their own.
6. Record a video podcast of their work of art describing their idea, how their
idea manifested, and what their thought process was while creating the
work of art.
7. Post the video podcast on the website.
8. Participate in a Gallery Walk. Students will place their works of art on the
wall. Students will walk around examining each work of art while listening

to the podcast of the work of art on the classroom website.
9. Students will respond to the work of art by writing sophisticated comments
to the video podcast for each students work.
Product/Assessment

Students works of art will be assessed based on their ability to express their
opinion and view of genetic manipulation and how it is affecting the environment
the similarities between their work of art and Alexis Rockmans work, and the
quality of their video podcast explaining their work of art.
