FASHION FORECASTING

PRESENTED BY
Ravi kant Dubey
Fashion & Textile designer
Fashion and Textiles are business activities
CREATIVE BUISNESS
WHY DO WE NEED TO PREDICT / FORECAST ?
TRENDS
THE FASHION TREND CYCLE
First part of the cycle, where the trend is highly hunted immediately after seeing that
great fashionable hat, dress or shoe on the runway, red carpet or music video. Next,
comes the emulation phase, where everyone wants a piece of the trend. Only big
shots, celebrities and fashion industry players have approach to latest fashion right
off the runway, which yet not showed up in retail stores.
During second phase, this newbie will appear in news papers, fashion magazines, TV
and internet. At last, the trend will be soaked in the market, commonly at bit lower
cost.
In the second phase new merchandise is available in bit expensive designer
collections. It is only the third phase, where the merchandise is available to the mass
market at affordable cost for most buyers.
The major part of over all mass will purchase it somewhere between second and
third phase.
Before two or three decades it might have taken a some rears to make it from runway
to mass market, however, nowadays producers have put the fashion cycle into rapid
speed. Now, a hot trend often makes it appearance in low cost or discount retail store
in as little as a few days or months.
FASHION CYCLE
A variation of the PRODUCT LIFE CYCLE which reflects the sales history of the prevailing style of consumer
articles such as clothing, soft goods, interior decoration, car design etc. Styles may be very short lived, in which
case they may be termed 'FADS' or last for many years. Either way, a fashion cycle is seen as comprising three
stages defined as distinctiveness, primary emulation and secondary or economic emulation. Take up of a new
fashion by INNOVATORS seeking distinctiveness who will then be emulated by EARLY ADOPTERS who wish to
copy them. In turn, if the fashion appears to be attractive to the mass market manufacturers will rapidly bring
out large quantities of similar articles at much lower prices - Princess Di look-alikes, designer jeans - with the
result that the innovator may well look elsewhere to regain distinctiveness thereby initiating a new cycle.
Do fashion designers start trends or do they have an ability to anticipate fashion trends?
When a new product is released there is a principle called the theory of diffusion which helps answer the
question of why fashion designers are so clairvoyant.
THE THEORY OF NEW PRODUCT DIFFUSION
Innovators venturesome people with an ability to process emerging information
Early adopters popular people (social leaders) who are first to try new products
Early majority people with many social contacts that quickly mainstream products
Late majority skeptical people that will try a product only if it is a true trend
Laggards people who look for the Levi tag in the pocket of a pair of corduroy pants
The best fashion designers are clearly innovators, people with an ability to
process information from magazines, television, movies, songs, art, buyers,
consumers and sales people, and then correlate with existing fashion to forecast
color and style. It's an ability that can't be learned, you either have it or you
don't. This ability, however, gets better over time and when mentored properly
becomes simply extraordinary.
color is the byproduct of the spectrum of light, as it is reflected or absorbed, as received by the human eye and
processed by the human brain.
When light hits objects, some of the wavelengths are absorbed and some are reflected, depending on the
materials in the object. The reflected wavelengths are what we perceive as the object's color
Our eyes are the input channels, if you will, for this light. One portion of the eye is called the retina and it
contains four types of light sensors. First are the rods, which record brightness and darkness and from which we
"see" a sort of coarse sketch of the world. Next are three types of cones, each one optimized to absorb a
different spectrum range of visible light. One set of cones absorbs long wavelengths, the reds. Another absorbs
mid-size wavelengths, the greens. The third absorbs short wavelengths, the blues. Together, these rods and
cones gather the information that our brain then processes into one combined image.
WHAT IS COLOUR?
What this all means for the designer is that color is a function of light and biology!
which means that no two people see color exactly the same.

CORPORATE BACKGROUND
CORPORATE OVERVIEW
Headquartered in Carlstadt, N.J., Pantone, Inc. is the world-renowned authority
on color. For more than 45 years, Pantone has been inspiring design
professionals with products, services and leading technology for the colorful
exploration and expression of creativity.
In 1963, Lawrence Herbert, Pantones founder, created an innovative system for
identifying, matching and communicating colors to solve the problems
associated with producing accurate color matches in the graphic arts
community. His insight that the spectrum is seen and interpreted differently by
each individual led to the innovation of the PANTONE MATCHING SYSTEM

, a
book of standardized color in fan format.
Pantone has since expanded its color matching system concept to other color-
critical industries, including digital technology, fashion, home, plastics,
architecture and contract interiors, and paint. Today, the PANTONE

Name is
known worldwide as the standard language for accurate color communication,
from designer to manufacturer to retailer to customer, across a variety of
industries. It continues to develop color communication and inspirational tools,
and aggressively adopts new digital technology to address the color needs of the
creative community everywhere.
MARKETS & PRODUCTS
Each year, innumerable products and
services are sold by Pantone and its
hundreds of licensees in over 100
countries in the graphic arts, fashion,
home, interior, plastics, architectural,
paint, industrial design and consumer
markets.

SPRING / SUMMER 2 0 1 0
Tones deriving from Plants, Minerals, Vegetables and Dirt are creating
a unique beauty. Well find unnatural looking colors created from
natural dye developments such as baby indigo and madder red.
Colors take on fantastic high shine, super gloss lacquer and patents
for pale and earth tones.
Colors become more saturated with a clean impact for maximum
contrasts and filled tones. Contrast can be wild and furious, stark or
slight. Statement: bright colours for one colour styling. Brights are
filled with light.
Bright deep darks can deceive the eye. Urban concrete tones become
new neutrals raw and textured layers.
Textiles are developed into still more diversity and specified by the
end use of them. Blends are becoming more sophisticated: cellulose
fibers will along with being on their own and with stretch
blends - be blended with wool (which has finally been recognized
for summer-use) silk, linen and ramie. Along with this classic way of
textile-thinking many more will be explored and lead into really
new approaches of thinking and production embracing the consumer
as part of the creation process. The performance of the fabric is
the key word in terms of function - breathability, absorbability,
temperature
adjustment etc. - maintenance cleaning (green laundry),
shape steadfast and durability, just to mention a few parameters.
Just as yarns will be still finer and have more refined performance
properties thanks to developing of spinning processes, finishing is
still growing in importance and processes are refined and improved,
new techniques invented.
The overall question of interest in the textile production is how to
take care of our environment:
Ecological is no longer just a fashion word!
