Foreword
T o the engineer responsible for the design and operation
o f safe and efficient piping systems, t h i s "Datalog" i s pre-
sented w i t h the hope that i t w i l l f a c i l i t a t e the burdensome
tasks peculiar to piping layout.

Painstaking efforts have been made to assemble such

standards, technical data, charts and recommendations as
are necessary for him to cope w i t h the diverse problems i n
Power P l a n t and Industrial Piping, many o f which, due to
the trend toward higher pressures and temperatures, are o f a
highly specialized nature.

The "Datalog" divides i t s e l f into two sections, the f i r s t

of which i s devoted almost entirely to dimensions and gen-
eral notes w i t h reference to fabrication and shop practice.
The Standards shown are those approved by recognized
engineering groups such a s the American Standards Associa-
tion, American Society for Testing and Materials, American
Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Welding Society,
P i p e Fabrication Institute and others. The data contained
herein are those a s taken from the most recent issues of
these Standards.

The Technical Section, which begins on page 165, in-

cludes technical data, charts and recommendations, which,
we be1ieve, conform with the most stringent engineering
practice. A great part of t h i s information i s the result o f
tests and investigations conducted by our own Research
Department, supplemented by a background of successful
performance i n industry.

The knowledge o f piping which we have gained i n over a

half-century has not been confined to design and fabrication
alone, but includes a wide f i e l d experience i n erecting,
testing and placing in operation, p i p i n g systems for every
power plant and industrial need. The publishing of t h i s
book has been actuated by our desire to convey to the En-
gineering Fraternity and t o the buyers and users of piping,
the knowledge gained by extensive research and operation
throughout that period.

Physical a n d Chemical D a t a for Piping Materials

T h i s section of the D A T A L O G covers physical dimensions and properties, chemical properties, manufacturing
tolerances, pressure-temperature ratings, etc. for the moior types of piping components. Some of the equipment
items are pipe materials, welding fittings, flanges and flanged fittings, valves, expansion joints, bolts and gaskets.
Some fabrication data are included such a s bending radii, arc lengths, and minimum tangents; welding data such as
end bevel and backing details, machining detoils such as flange facings, drilling, etc.

W a l l Thickness Calculations And Working Pressures For Pipe

Due ta the fact that metals i n general lose strength a s service temperatures increase, the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel
Code, Section I, Power Boilers, and the ANSl Code for Pressure Piping, 831.1, Power Piping, have estobjished safe working
stresses for mast materials used, based on the service temperature. Allowable stress values for the various grades of pipe most
cammonly used i n Power P i p i n g are shown on pages 18 through 21, c l a s s i f i e d under the applicable ASTM specification. These tobu-
lotions cover ollowable stresses (SE) for bath the Boiler Code, Section I and 831.1 Pawer Piping Code a t temperatures ranging from
-20°F t o 1500DF, w i t h the 1250 t o 1500°F range applying to the Boiler Code only. I t should be noted also that the Bailer Code indi-
cates allowable stresses for some of the materials ot temperatures higher than those allowed i n the Power Piping Code, 831.1,
w h i c h are tabulated here. Similarly, the Code for Pressure P i p i n g a l l o w s higher warking stresses for Petroleum Refinery Piping i n
ANSl 831.3, Gas Transmission and D i s t r i b u t i o n Piping i n ANSl 831.8, Industrial Gas and Air Piping, etc. For allowable stresses
for these code iurisdictions, the designer i s referred t a the applicable code.
The f o l l o w i n g formulae shall be used i n determining minimum pipe w a l l thi,cknesses required for known pressures a t given tem-
peratures, or for c a l c u l a t i n g maximum allowable working pressures for known miiiimum w a l l thicknesses at given temperatures.
