Measurements and accuracy

Purpose

Find the beaker which has the most precise and accurate (from the table in sheet).

Hypothesis

We predict that the beaker that is the most precise and accurate should be 50mL
beaker because this beaker is the only one that use pipette to fill 10mL water, not like the
100mL beaker and 10mL graduated cylinder which use eyes to fill 10mL that may cause
many errors.

Pre-lab questions

1. You are given a bottle that contains 4.59 cm
3
of a metallic solid. The total mass of the
bottle is 35.66 g. The empty bottle weighs 14.23 g. What is the density of the solid?

Solution :

2. Mercury is traded by the flask, a unit that has a mass of 34.5 kg. What is the volume
of a flask of mercury if the density of mercury is 13.6 g/ml? (1ml = 1 cm
3
)

Solution :

Equipment

- Two 100mL beakers
- Two 50mL beakers
- One 10mL graduated cylinder
- One 10mL pipette with suction device
- Distilled water
- Saltwater solution A or B

Note
Procedure

1. Weigh a dry 100mL beaker, a 10mL graduated cylinder and a 50mL beaker and record
the mass for each on the data sheet. NOTE: Write down all the numbers since it tells
us about the significant figures.
2. Fill another 100mL beaker with distilled water and measure its temperature.
3. To the best of your abilities, put 10mL of water in a) 100mL beaker, b) 10mL
graduated cylinder, c) 10mL pipette. Record the volume for each one.
4. Weigh items a), b), and transfer c) into the previously weighed 50mL beaker and
record the masses. BE CAREFUL!!
5. Do this three times for each glassware.
6. Use the result to calculate the density of water for each equipment. Compare the
accuracy to a reference provided in this paper.

From the table in the sheet; water at 24.5

The most precise : 50mL beaker
The most accurate : Graduated cylinder
Discussion

In this experiment, our result is follow our hypothesis that the most precise beaker is
50mL beaker because this beaker is the only one that use pipette to fill 10mL water, not like
the 100mL beaker and 10mL graduated cylinder which use eyes to fill 10mL that may cause
many errors but it is not follow the hypothesis that the most accurate beaker should be 50 mL
beaker because the result show that the graduated cylinder is the most accurate. We know that
the temperature cause density change so we need to measure the temperature of water first for
us to know what actually density we should has from the temperature we got (by using table in
sheet) then we got that our real density should be 0.9971749 g/ml so from result we got 50mL
beaker is the most precise and graduated cylinder is the most accurate which is not follow our
hypothesis, we think this happen because we are not used to using the pipette so it might cause
some errors that make volume not 10 mL or because when we try to measure the mass of that
three beaker, some of water might evaporate so it make the volume not 10mL.
