CIVILIZATION
The history of Western music started as
early as the ancient times, though this was a
matter of speculation and conjecture.
Musical instruments have been found on
surviving potteries, sculptures and paintings
depicting people playing these
instruments.From these known evidences,
we know that music was as important then
as it is today.
EGYPT
The presence of music in the life of Ancient
Egypt, the first great nation, is abundantly
documented in many tomb painting. Music is part of
the daily lives of the people. Farmers sang as they
planted and harvested their crops. Large orchestras
entertained palace guests and the harp was played in
temples by musicians who were also their priests.
The army marched to the sound of trumpets and
drums. The great god OSI RI S, was worshiped to the
sound blaring trumpets believed to have been
invented by the god himself.
ASSYRIA
The Assyrians went to battle with their
instruments wrapped around their bodies and
were welcomed back by large orchestras and
hundreds of singers. For quieter music, they
use string instruments struck with small
beaters, like dulcimers.
CHINA
In the orient, the Chinese had drums,
gongs, bell, and xylophones to entertain
emperors and guests. Music was also
used to come to an agreement over
discussions and arguments and
maintain peace on the kingdom.
ISRAEL
The Old testament tells how the
wall of Jericho were brought down
by the sounding of seven shofars,
made from rams horns. The Shofar
is the oldest musical instrument and
is still used in synagogues on holy
days.
GREECE
In the ancient world, music rose to greater
heights in Greece. MUSIC came from the
Greek wordMUSES, who were also Zeuss
daughters, in charge of the arts and sciences. The
invention of the first musical instrument was
attributed to the gods.
This according to the Greeks, was the first
woodwind instrument. Apollo is credited with
making the first string instruments
Another Ancient Greek hero, Orpheus was
a musician, whose singing and lyre-playing
was so beautiful that he could move men,
animals, and even inanimate objects. He
is often shown playing his lyre to an
audience of animals.
