QuickSetupGuide

Purpose:
ThepurposeofthisguideistoprovideaneasysetupreferenceforcustomersorSchneider
ElectricemployeesnewtoPelcoDigitalSentryIPcamerasystems.Theideaistoprovideasingle
referenceforallstepsnecessarytogetsuchasystemupandrunning.Thisguideonlyincludesthesteps
deemedabsolutelynecessaryforafunctionalsystem.

TypicalDesign:


CameraInstallation:
Thisguideassumescameraselectionhasalreadyoccurred.Thereareawidevarietyofcamera
andcameramountingoptionsavailable.Oncethebasecameramodelischosenitisaverygoodideato
consultthespecificationsheetofthatcameraforcompatiblemountingoptions.Eachcameramounting
optionwillcomewithinstallationinstructionsthatshouldbefollowedascloselyaspossible.Adiagram
oftypicalcameramountingoptionsisshownbelow.

TheEthernetcableshouldbeterminatedwithanRJ45connectoratthecameraandeitheran
RJ45orpatchpanelattheswitch.ItisaverygoodideatorequiretheinstallertocertifyeachEthernet
runwithacommercialcabletester.Mostcamerasystemissuescanbeattributedtoimproperwiring.
PlugtheEthernetcableintothecameraduringcamerainstallation,butdonotplugtheotherendinto
theswitch.
CameraConfiguration:
Oncecamerainstallationiscompletethenextstepistobringthecamerasonline.Pelcocameras
comeshippedfromthefactorysetupforDHCP.Thismeansthatwhenfirstpowereduptheywilllook
foraDHCPhosttoassignthemanIPaddress.InthetypicaldesigntherewillbenoDHCPavailableand
afterashorttimethecameraswilldefaulttoanIPaddressof192.168.0.20.Thisisveryimportant:when
firstsettingupcamerasdonotpluginandpowerupmorethanonecameraatatime.Poweringuptwo
camerasatthesametimewillresultinbothcamerasgoingto192.168.0.20.Ifyoustaggerthetime
betweenpluggingcamerasin(alloweachcamera30sec1mintopowerup)thenthenextcamera
pluggedinwillautomaticallygoto192.168.0.21andsoon.However,wehavefounditeasiestjustto
poweruponecameraatatime.
Step1:SetupyourlaptoporDVRnetworkcardtoastaticIPaddressof192.168.0.XXXwhere
XXXisanumberthatwillnotbeusedbyanycameraonthesystem(usually233orsimilar).
Step2:PlugoneoftheIPcamerasintothePOEswitch.
Step3:Wait.Usuallyitisagoodideatousethecommandprompt(run>cmd)anddoa
continuousping(typepingt192.168.0.20)andletitrununtilyouseearesponse.Thisletsyou
knowwhenthecamerahascompleteditspowerupsequenceanddefaultedtothe.20IP
address.Pelcoprovidestwofreesoftwareapplications,PelcoDeviceUtilityandEnduraUtilities,
thatwillsearchthenetworkandprovidealistofPelcodevicesfound.Theyareuseful,butnot
necessary.
Step4:OpenInternetExplorerandgototheaddressofthecamera(192.168.0.20).Theweb
pageforthecamerashouldopen.Inordertoseevideoonyourlaptopyouwillneedeither
AppleQuicktimeorPelcosVideoapplicationinstalled(itcomespreinstalledontheDVR).
Step5:Verifythecamerayouhaveconnectedtoistheoneyouwereexpecting.Ex:makesure
thecableislabeledcorrectlyandtheimageshowniscorrectforthatcamera.Havesomeone
waveorwalkinthefieldofview.
Step6:Logintothecamerabyclickingtheloginlinkontheupperright.Thedefault
username/passwordforallPelcocamerasisadmin/admin.Clickonthesettingslink.
Step7:Onthegeneralpagegivethecameraadescriptivename.Thisisusuallyacamera
numberfollowedbythelocationofthecameraorareathecameraiswatching.Camera
numberingandlocationshouldbeworkedoutaheadoftimetohaveaneasywaytoreferto
eachcameraandcheckoffalistwhencomplete.
Step8:GototheNetwork>GeneralpageandturnoffDHCP.GivethecameraastaticIP
address.Again,thisshouldbeworkedoutaheadoftimeandisusuallycorrelatedwithcamera
number.Ex:192.168.0.101forcamera#1192.168.0.102forcamera#2etcIfthenetworkis
beingmanagedyouwillusuallybegivenarangeofIPaddressesfromITtouse.Setthesubnet
maskto255.255.255.0andthegatewayto192.168.0.1(unlesstherangeyouuseisdifferent).
ThegatewayisusuallytheIPaddressofthenetworkswitch,butifallIPaddressesusedarein
therangeof192.168.0.XXXthegatewayisunnecessaryandcanbeleftblank.Hitsaveatthe
bottomandthecamerawillreboottothenewIPaddress.
Step9:Pluginthenextcamera.Whilethiscameraispoweringupproceedtostep10.
Step10:Toaimandfocusthecamera(thisstepisunnecessaryforPTZcameras).Physicallygo
outtothecameraandpluginwithaportableLCDscreen(theToteVisionLCD411andcarrying
caseTB410arethebestinmyopinion).ThesecanbepurchasedonlineorfromADI.Youwill
alsoneedthePelcocableIXSCwhichisaBNCtoministereoadaptorforpluggingintoPelco
cameras.
Step11:Oncepluggedintothecameraadjusttheaimofthecameratohityourtargetview.The
outerringofthecameracanrotatethecameraclockwiseorcounterclockwise90andthe
cameracanbetiltedupanddown45ineitherdirection.Youcannotrotatethecamerabeyond
theselimitswithoutdamagingit.Ifyouneedtorotatethecamerafurtherthenpullthecamera
down,turnit180,andreinstallit.
Step12:Adjustthebackfocus.Thisisthebackknoblocatedonthecameralens.Loosenthe
knoblikeascrewtofreeitforadjustment.Adjustittofiteverythingyouwanttomonitorinto
thefieldofview.Youmayneedtojumpbackandforthbetweenstep13andstep12untilyou
aresatisfied.Tightentheknobdowntolockthebackfocusinplace.
Step13:Ifyourcameramodelcomeswithautomaticfocusthisstepcanbeskipped.Youcan
adjustfocussettingsorforceanautofocusfromthecameraswebpageunderImage>Focus.
Ifyourcameraismanualfocusonlythenyouwillneedtoadjustthefrontknobonthelens
similartothebackfocus.WiththeportableLCDadjustthefocusuntiltheareayouwantto
monitorisinsharpfocus.Tightendowntheknobwhencomplete.
Step14:MakesuretheUPimagearrowispointingstraightuporelseyourimagewillbe
angled.Theinnermetalring(independentoftheouterringusedtoaimthecamera)canbe
rotatedupto90clockwiseorcounterclockwisetomakethisarrowpointup.
Step15:Verifythattheimageisinfocusandcatchingtheentiredesiredmonitoringareafrom
thecameraswebpage.OftentimestheimageintheportableLCDisslightlydifferentthanthat
ofthewebpage.Ifeverythinglooksgood,closeupthecameraandrepeatsteps115withthe
nextcamera.

Note:Whitebalanceandexposuresettingsmayalsoneedtobeadjustedforsomecamerasand
locations.Videofromeachcamerashouldbecheckedatleastonceduringthedayandonceat
nighttoensurethatallfocus,balance,andexposuresettingsareworking.

IPCameraNetworkConfigurationPage
DSSRVConfiguration:
TheDSSRVisaservergradenetworkvideorecorder.Installationinstructionsareincludedwith
theDSSRVandshouldbefollowedclosely.TheDSSRVcomeswithamouseandkeyboard,butdoesnot
comewithamonitor.ThemonitorconnectionsontheDSSRVareDVIonly(noVGA)sobeprepared.A
permanentmonitor/keyboard/mouseconnectionfortheDSSRVisoptional.OneofthefirstthingsIdois
enableremotedesktoptotheDSSRVsothatIcanusemylaptopformakinganyfuturechangestothe
DSSRVconfiguration.
Step1:AfterDSSRVinstallationiscompletemakeallpowerandnetworkconnectionsandpower
uptheDSSRV.
Step2:AtthewelcomescreenloginundertheDSServiceUseraccount.Thepasswordis
dsserviceuser(alllowercase).
Step3:ChangetheDSServiceUserpasswordunderControlPanel>UserAccountsifdesired.
Thisisusuallyagoodideaforsecurity,butmakesurethenewpasswordisrecordedand
availableforwhoeverisgoingtoneedaccesstothesystem.Setupremotedesktop(rightclick
mycomputer,choosetheremotetab).Choosethelevelofsecurityforremoteaccessthatyou
wishtoallow(usuallyanyversionofWindows).
Step4:Setupnetworkconnections.Inthetypicalsystemshownaboveonenetworkcardis
usedforthelocalcameranetworkandtheothernetworkcardcanbeconfiguredforacorporate
orremotenetworkconnection.Thelocalcameranetworkcard(NIC#2intypicaldesign)mustbe
setupinthesameIPaddressrangeasthecameras.ForexampleifyouareusingtheIPaddress
rangeof192.168.0.XXXforcamerasyourDSSRVcameraNICcouldhaveanIPaddressof
192.168.0.10.Subnetandgatewayshouldbethesameasthecameras(255.255.255.0and
192.168.0.1forexample).TypicallythesystemdesignerorITpersonwillassignIPaddressesto
eachpieceofequipmentaheadoftime.Thisnotonlykeepsthingsorganized,buthelpswith
troubleshooting.Theothernetworkcard(NIC#1)canbesetuphowevernecessarytoprovidea
remoteconnectiontothecamerasystem.TypicallythisisastaticIPonacustomernetwork.This
keepsallcameratrafficisolatedandoffthecustomersnetwork.
Step5:RuntheDSQuickSetupWizardandchoosenewinstallation.Ifyoudonothaveall
camerascompleteyoucancomebacktothislaterandchooseaddcamerastoaddnewcameras
tothesystem.
Step6:Chooseausernameandpasswordforthecameraserver(defaultisadmin/admin).Thisis
separatefromtheusername/passwordusedtologintotheDSSRV.Thisusernameand
passwordbecomestheadministratorpasswordforcameraconfigurationandviewing.Similarto
theDSSRVlogonpassword,itisagoodideatochangethispasswordfromthefactorydefault,
butmakesureitissavedsomewhere.Hitnext.
Step7:ThesetupwizardwillaskyoutochooseacomputernameandliststheIPaddressesof
bothnetworkcards(ifavailable).RenametheDSSRVifdesiredandchoosetheIPforthelocal
cameranetwork.Clicknext.
Step8:Thestoragelocationsboxcomesup.Thedefaultsettingsshouldbecorrect(largestorage
drivesselected).Hitnext.
Step9:ThewizardwillnowsearchthenetworkforallIPcamerasandprovidethemtoyouina
listwithacheckboxintheleftcolumn.SelectallcamerasyouwanttorecordonthisDSSRVby
clickingtheircorrespondingcheckbox.Ifyousetupthecameranamesasdescribedabovethey
willautomaticallybebroughtintothesystemwiththesamename.Donothitnextyet.
Step10:Ifyouaregoingtoberecordingmorethan8cameras,youwillneedtoobtainalicense
foreachadditionalcameraabove8.ThiscanbedonebyemailingaPOandtheproductID(click
enterlicenseonthecameradialogbox)toPelcoSales.Theywillemailyoubackalicensekeyto
enterundertheenterlicensebuttoninthecameradialogbox.
Step10:AcrossthebottomofthecameraselectiondialogboxyouwillseetabsthatsayQuality,
PTZ,Authentication,Recording,Motion,andAudio.
Quality:Notcorrectbydefault.Lookupthedatasheetforeachcameramodelyouare
using.Settheresolutionandframeratetothehighestsettingsshownonthedatasheet.
PTZ:Shouldbecorrectbydefault.VerifyPTZisenabledifusingaPTZcamera.
Authentication:Allsettingsshouldbecorrectbydefault.
Recording:Notcorrectbydefault.Choosemotionrecording.Motionrecordinggreatly
increasesthedaysofrecordingyoucanprovidebynotrecordingcameraswhenthereis
nomotion.Storageiscostlyandusuallyselectedtoprovideaspecifiednumberofdays
storagesomotionrecordingcangreatlyreducetheamountofstoragerequiredand
thusthecostofthesystem.Motionrecordingalsosavesonread/writecyclestothe
harddrivesreducingfailureratesandmaintenancecosts.
Motion:Notcorrectbydefault.BydefaultInCameramotiondetectionisselected.
However,youcannotuseincameramotiondetectionifyouhavesetcameraqualityto
maximum.Also,Iprefertheservermotionsettingsandeaseofchangingseveral
camerasveryquickly.IfyoudonotloaduptheDSSRVwithcamerastheserverside
motiondetectiondoesnotovertaxtheCPU.Chooseserversidemotiondetectionforall
camerasandleavetheothersettingsatdefault.Theywillbeadjustedpercameralater.
Audio:Notusuallyused.
Step11:Hitnext.Asummaryofallsettingswillappear.Hitnext.
Step12:OncecompleteascreenwillappearaskingifyouwanttoopenControlPointandview
thecameras.Checkorunchecktheboxandhitfinish.
Step13:Thisstepshouldneverbeskippedforcorrectconfiguration.Motionsettingsandmask
needtobetunedindividuallyforeachcamera.Failuretodosomayresultmissingcritical
events.OpenDSAdmin(programs>Pelco>DSAdmin),typeintheadministratorpasswordfor
cameraconfiguration.DSAdminshouldautomaticallyconnecttothelocalDSSRVsystem.
ExpandthelocalDSSRVsystemandclickonthecamerasdirectoryandyoushouldseethe
followingtabstotheright:General,VideoSettings,Motion,OnScreenDisplay,Timelapse
Storage,MotionStorage,andPTZ.ThelocationofthesesettingsvariesbyversionofDSSRVand
insomeversionsthesettingsareonlyavailablewhenyouselectindividualcameras.Configure
allcamerasforthefollowing:
MotionStorage:Fullweekfast.Whenmotionisdetectedcamerawillrecordat
maximumquality.
PreMotionRecording:framestotriggerrecording:1/prerecordingseconds:3.
PostMotionRecording:framestostoprecording:8/postrecordingseconds:10.
Thesesettingsensurethatrecordingdoesnotstopifsomeonestopsmovinginthe
cameraframeforasecondandensuresthatcameracapturessomeportionoftime
beforeandaftermotionwastriggered.
Sensitivity:Thechangeinpixelvalueforthatpixeltobeconsideredchanged.Achange
fromblacktowhiteis10000.Lowerthisnumbertomakethemotiondetectionmore
sensitivetochangesincolor.
UnmaskedAreaforMotion:Thepercentchangeoftheunmaskedareatotrigger
motion.Basically,howbigofanareaoftheimagemustchangetotriggermotion
recording.Thedefaultsettingisusuallyfineforshorttomediumdistances,butifa
cameraisviewingalargeareathentheunmaskedareasettingneedstobereducedtoa
settingsuchthatitwilltriggeroffapersonwalking.Forexample:ifapersononlytakes
up2%ofthefullimagethenthearea%needstobesettoatleast2%ifnotless.
ReferenceCount:Thissettingindicateshowoftenthereferenceimageisupdated.The
referenceimageiscomparedtoeachnewimagetocheckformotion.Forexampleifyou
haveacameraat8framespersecondareferencecountof80wouldmeanthe
referenceimageisupdatedevery10seconds.Thedefaultsettingisusuallyfine.
MotionMask:Allundesiredobjectscapableofmotionshouldbemaskedouttoprevent
undesiredtriggeringofmotion.Thisincludestreeswithleavesthatwillblowinthe
wind,publicstreetsinthebackgroundofacameraimage,etc
Onceallsettingsareadjusted,watchthecameraformotion.Whenmotionoccursablueoutline
shouldappeararoundtheimageindicatingmotionrecording.Ifnoimageappears,thecamerais
notrecordingandsettingsshouldbetightened.

ControlPointConfiguration
ControlPointisfreeuserfriendlycameraviewingsoftwarethatcanbeinstalledonanyPCand
usedtoconnecttotheDSSRVtoviewcameras.ControlPointcomespreinstalledontheDSSRVandwill
automaticallyaddtheDSSRVwhenthequicksetupisrun.ForviewingfromotherPCsfollowthesteps
below.
Step1:DownloadthelatestversionofControlPointfromwww.Pelco.com.
Step2:InstallControlPointonthedesiredPC.
Step3:OpenControlPointandselectthesetupoption(lookslike3computermonitors).
Step4:Choosemanagesystemsandclicktheaddnewsystem(monitorwithagreenplussign).
Givethenewsystemtobeaddedadescriptivename.UnderhostnameorIPaddressyoucan
eitherentertheDSSRVcomputernameoritsIPaddress.Ifthecustomernetworksideofthe
DSSRVissettoDHCPthentheDSSRVcomputernamemustbeused.Enterthecamerasystem
administratorusernameandpassword(otheruserscanbecreatedwithlowerlevelaccessin
DSAdmin).Checktheautoconnectbox,makesurevideorecorderisalsochecked,andhitok.
Step5:TheDSSRVshouldappearonthelistandattempttoconnect.Rightclickandchoose
connectifitdoesnotautomaticallyconnectthefirsttime.
YoushouldnowbeabletonavigatetoseetheDSSRVunderthelivetabwithalistofallattached
cameras.HitthequestionmarkforafullControlPointusermanual.
