Teacher’s Notes

Task 1
1. Write the phrase “You are not exactly what I expected” on the board.
2. Ask the students who may say this phrase and why.
3. Encourage the students to think of possible answers to someone who may say this phrase.
4. Play scene 11 with sound on but without subtitles and freeze the image where Robin Hood
appears (0:51:20). Ask the students to discover who uses the phrase “You are not what I
expected”
5. Play the same sequence again (0:49:13 to 0:51:20) and ask the students to discover the
answer to the phrase and who says it.
6. Write on the board:
“You are not what I expected”
“You shouldn’t judge people before you get to know them”
Encourage the students to express their opinion about the answer. Ask them if they
agree with Princess Fiona justifying their opinion.
What manners of Princess Fiona made Shrek think that she was not what he expected?
7. Give the students a copy for activity 1. Play the whole scene with sound on but without
English subtitles. Ask the students to complete this short part of the script.

Activity 1
Listen to the scene and complete the missing parts

SHREK: [Belches]
DONKEY: ....................................................................!
SHREK: What? It's a ........................................... Better .......................... than
...................…., I always say.
DONKEY: Well, it's no way to behave ..................................................................... a
princess.
PRINCESS FIONA: [Belches] Thanks.

8. Play the scene again but this time with sound on and English subtitles to check activity 1.

Task 2. Discussion:
1. Encourage the students to discuss and debate:

a. Does Shrek act as we expected an Ogre to act? If Yes, Justify your answer. If no, How
do you expect an Ogre to act?
b. Does Robin Hood act as we expected him to act? If yes, justify your answer. If no, How
do you expect him to act?

2. Stereotypes.
• Give the students a copy for activity 2. The stereotypes chart.
• Play the scene again with sound on and English subtitles and ask them to write the
phrases Fiona, Shrek or Robin Hood say in the right column. Share with the whole
class. Phrases said by the characters should illustrate if they are acting as expected or
not.
• Ask the students to concentrate on manners and attitudes and add more information to
complete this chart in small groups.
Then, every group shares what they have written and the other groups include information
they don’t have.
