Competency 5: Reflection
SEI 650

The products I have chosen show my competency in Planning and
Implementing Individualized Instruction.
The first product was completed in SEI 525 in the Fall of 2012. I submitted
curriculum modifications based on observations of a child and also goals on that
childs Individualized Education Plan (IEP). This was a very useful activity as I was
able to take the childs goals and come up with modifications that would help him in
the classroom setting. These modifications were in addition to developmental
therapy the child was receiving so it was nice to be able to offer extra supports for
the child to be successful in reaching his goals. This activity really gave me practice
in thinking in terms of individualized instruction based on observations and goals of
a child.
The second product was completed in SEI 524 in the Summer of 2013. I
chose the Observation and Intervention Planning Project. This project allowed me
to focus on one child and observe that child and come up with goals for that child
based on the observations I made of the child. It also made me think through the
goals by requiring rationale for the goals and also detailed plans for addressing the
goal. The purpose of this activity is to foster the growth of social, emotional and/or
play in a child based on observations of that child.
The third product was completed in SEI 523 in the Fall of 2013. The product
I choose was the Progress Monitoring Chart. This activity was done as a part of a
Routines Based Early Intervention with a family. The idea of this activity was to
create and implement the progress-monitoring chart to help the family achieve the
outcomes we came up with the family based on concerns expressed by the family.
This activity came up with very specific chart that the family could use to show
progress in the goals that the team had come up with to address the concerns of the
family.
The forth product was completed in SEI 513 in the Spring of 2014. This
product is the Intervention portion of the Individual Practicum Plan that I came up
with. The purpose of this project was to create a positive behavior chart for a child
in the classroom who was having difficultly with emotional regulation and
participation in the class. By observing the child I was able to recognize some areas
that were difficult for the child and came up with some strategies to make the child
successful in some of those areas. This project had me create strategies for a child
that was just starting the referral process. He had no supports except what I was to
put in place. Although this was a project for the class, I used it as a way to really
help the child be successful in the classroom setting. This was a plan that was
specific to the childs struggles and needs based solely on observation and
implemented in the absence of an IEP.
