Through the ages one of the most important things that has lead to the

development of humanity is communication. Nowadays, the mobile phone is one

of the most utilized means of communication and by the end of the current year
the number of active lines will be equal to the world population about seven
billions. However, it is unknown for a huge part of the population how a mobile
phone network exactly works.

First of all, a mobile phone network is geographically divided in sections
called cells, because of it in some countries mobile phones are called cellphones
or just cellular phone. Every cell has a radio base station, which is composed of
antennas with a receptor and an emitter of signals and is connected to a
telephone exchange, where is placed a huge database that is updated every
second containing information where is each mobile phone, and is responsible
for directing calls.

Considering that a person A would like to call a person B, lets take a look
at the whole process taken to enable the communication between this two
people.
Firstly, the mobile phone of the person A emit the number of the person B
via radio waves in a specific and reserved frequency. The number is received in
the radio base station correspondent to the cell where the person A is situated,
the station detects whether the person B is not in the same cell of the person A.
The number is sent to a telephone exchange to check which is the cell referent to
the person B. When the cell of the person B is known, the telephone exchange
sends the information of the telephone call to the radio base station
correspondent to this cell and then the information of the call is sent to the
mobile phone of the person B, in turn it rings. When the person B answers the
call, each sation, where are the two people search which frequency channel is
avaliable and then inform to each mobile phone the especific frequency channel
that has to be used in the communication.
