"Philosophy Of The Doorstep" The house, the shell which ts mans back, looks inward to family, a microcosmic world in which the street games change with the seasons and the hours are reected in the cycle of street activity. In the suburbs and slums the vital relationship between the house and the street survives, children run about, (the street is comparatively quiet), peo- ple stop and talk, dismantled vehicles are parked, (in the back gardens are pigeons and ferrets and the shops are round the corner), you know the milkman, YOU are outside YOUR house is in YOUR street. Streets would be PLACES and not corridors or balconies. Thoroughfares where there are shops, post boxes, telephone kiosks. (1) A FORBIDDEN EMPIRE Theres one more thing that has been growing in my mind ever since the Smithsons uttered the word "doorstep" at Aix. It hasnt left me ever since. Ive been mulling over it, expanding the meaning as far as I could stretch it. Ive even gone so far as to identify it as a symbol with what archi- tecture as such is and should accomplish. To establish the IN-BETWEEN is to reconcile conicting polarities. Provide the place where they can interchange and you re-establish the original twin phenomena. (Martin Buber calls it "das Gestalt gewordene Zwischen".) Take an example: the world of the house with me inside and you outside, or vice versa. Theres also the world of the street the city with you inside and me outside or vice versa. Get what I mean? Two worlds clashing, no transition. The individual on one side, the collective on the other. Its terrifying. Between the two, society in general throws up lots of barriers, whilst architects in particular are so poor in spirit that they provide doors two inches thick and six feet high; at surfaces in a at surface of glass as often as not. J ust think of it: two inches or a quarter of an inch if it is glass between such fantastic phenomena hair-raising, brutal like a guillotine. Every time we pass through a door like that were split in two but we dont take notice any more, and simply walk on, halved. Is that the reality of a door? What then, I ask, is the greater reality of a door? Well, perhaps the greater reality of a door is the localized setting for a wonderful human gesture: conscious entry and departure. Thats what a door is, something that frames your coming and going, for its a vital experience not only for those that do so, but also for those encountered or left behind. A DOOR IS A PLACE MADE FOR AN OCCASION. A door is a place made for an act that is repeated millions of times in a life time between the rst entry and the last exit. I think thats symbolical. And what is the greater reality of a window? I leave that to you. (2) (1) Allison and Peter Smithson in A. Smithson ed. Team 10 Primer, London 1968 and Cambridge/Mass. 1974. Preero dejarlo a vuestro criterio. (2) (1) Cf. Allison y Peter Smithson en A. Smithson ed. Team 10 Primer, Londres 1968 y Cambridge/Mass. 1974. INPERIO DEBEKATUA "Atalasearen losoa" Etxea, gizakiaren bizkarrean horren ongi egokitzen den oskola, barne begirada bat egiten dio familiari, mundu mikro- skopikoa, zeinean kaleko jolasak urtaroekin batera aldatzen baitira eta orduak kaleko bizitzaren zikloan islatzen dira. Aldiri eta auzuneetan etxearen eta kalearen arteko bizi-harremana mantentzen da. Umeek korrika egiten dute nahi bezala (kon- parazioan, kalea lasai dago), jendea hitz egiteko gelditzen da, kotxe oso zaharrak daude aparkatuta (atzeko patioetan usoak eta hudoiak dabiltza joan etorrian, eta dendak harri barruan daude), denek ezagutzen dute esne-saltzailea, GIZAKIA kan- poan dago eta BERE etxea BERE kalean dago. Kaleak, beraz, LEKUAK izango lirateke eta ez pasabideak edo balkoiak, etorbideak non komertzioak, postontziak eta telefono kabinak dauden. (1) Bada, oraindik ere, beste ideia bat nire buruan garatzen joan dena Smithson-ekoek "atalase" hitza Aix-en aipatu zutenetik, eta geroztik abandonatu ez nauena. Hausnarketa asko egin ditut horri buruz, bere esanahia ahal izan dudan bezainbeste zabalduz. Are gehiago, arkitektura zer den eta zein funtzio bete beharko lukeen azaltzen duen sinbolotzat hartu dut. TARTEKO PUNTUA ezartzea aurka dauden polaritateak adiskidetzea da. Aukeratu gune bat haien arteko harrema- nak posible egiteko eta fenomeno biki originalak berregingo dituzue (Martin Buber-ek "das Gestalt gewordene Zwischen" deitzen dio). J ar dezagun adibide bat: etxearen mundua, ni barruan nagoe- la eta zuek kanpoan, edo alderantziz. Era berean, kalearen mundua - hiria - aukera nezake, zuek barruan zaudetela eta ni kanpoan, edo alderantziz. Ulertzen duzue zer esan nahi dudan? Trantsiziorik gabe talka egiten duten bi mundu. Giz- abanakoa alde batean, eta kolektiboa bestean. Beldurgarria da. Bion artean, gizarteak bere osotasunean hamaika muga altxatu ohi ditu. Bien bitartean, arkitektoek bereziki, horren espiritu urrikoak dira non bost zentimetro lodi eta ia bi metro luze diren ateak jartzen baitituzte tartean; azalera lauak aza- lera lau batean, maiz kristalezkoa. Pentsa ezazue une batez: bost zentimetro edo hirurogei milimetro beirazkoa bada hain liluragarri diren fenomenoen artean ikaragarri bortitza da, gillotina baten modukoa. Honelako ate bat zeharkatzen dugun aldi bakoitzean erdiz erdi banatzen gaituzte, baina jada ez gara konturatzen, eta horrela jarraitzen dugu ibiltzen, erdiz erdi banaturik. Hau al da ate baten errealitatea? Zein da orduan, galdetzen dut nik, atearen azken errealitatea? Agian azkeneko errea- litate hori giza-iniziatiba liluragarri baten eszenatokia izatea litzateke: sarrera eta irteera kontzienteak. Horixe da ate bat, gure joan etorriak markoztatzen dituen espazio bat, eta hau funtsezko esperientzia da, ez bakarrik egiten dituenarentzat baizik eta aurkitzen dituenentzat edo atzean gelditzen diren- entzat ere bai. ATE BAT EGOERA BATENTZAT SORTUTAKO LEKU BAT DA. Ate bat bizitzan milioika aldiz errepikatzen den ekintza bat burutzeko sortu den lekua da, hasierako sarrer- atik hasita azkeneko irteerara arte. Sinbolikoa dela uste dut. Eta zein da leihoaren azken errealitatea? Nahiago dut zuen iritziaren menpe uztea. (2) (1) Cf. Allison eta Peter Smithson in A. Smithson ed. Hauetan, alderdirik ludikoenetik, errepresio eta mendeku sen- timenduak adierazpen artistiko batez osatuak agertzen dira. In general tat ort is involved in cross-disciplinary projects that incorporate visual arts, architecture and urbanism. More specifically we have become increasingly concerned with the nature of human conflicts, their immediate dependency on contextual conditions such as the ethnical tissue, spatial settings (`spaces of conflict and spaces of exception), local politics and economics as well as their relational connectedness with global processes. In rendering these largely urban phenomena visible, we aim to reveal the way in which specific conflicts are dealt with and how conflict anxiety might be overcome by presenting concepts of `alternative realities in which feelings of suppression or revenge are given artistic expression in a more playful manner. `Model worlds create the appropriate simulation space, in which `reality remains merely suggested and sketchy. Changing scale places pressures and compulsions in an ever-changing perspective: Suddenly this overview, but in the very middle of life.
