I am a nurse on the ACE unit and currently in the process of credentialing to a Level III RN. I have
been working on my Standard of Care for my portfolio. When I brought it to Geriatric Leadership
Committee a question was brought up if it would serve better as a guideline. Stephanie Cox referred
me to you in regards to this question. Attached is my Standard of Care: Oral Hydration Management.
Could you offer some input as to if you think this would be better as a guideline?

Hi Caitlin,

Thank you so much for bringing this guideline forward! One question- will this document apply to all
geriatric patients house-wide or just those on ACE? Depending on that I think this should either be a
guideline or a P&P. Let me know your thoughts and then we can dialogue further regarding the
process.

Thank you again for looking over my standard of care/guideline. Looking at it as a guideline vs a
policy I looked a little further into the definitions and I believe mine would fall under a guideline
because it is more of a recommendation and not a "must do". I wanted to have you look it over before
I brought it to the Nursing Practice Guideline Subcommittee. Do you think this would be better as a
guideline instead of a standard of care? If so, would my next step be to take it to the Nursing Practice
Guideline Subcommittee?

I do think it would be better as a guideline than a standard of care.

Our next meeting will be on June 18
th
from 0800-0930, we meet in Leprino 608. Let me know if this
date would work for you to come and present this guideline and if there is a 15-minute time slot that
would work best during 0800-0930.
