    Serotonin and dopamine are important neurotransmitters that interact in complex ways in the brain. In people with schizophrenia, it is theorized that an imbalance between these neurotransmitters contributes to the symptoms. Specifically, lower than normal serotonin levels may cause increased dopamine activity in the mesolimbic pathway of the brain, which is associated with the positive symptoms of schizophrenia like hallucinations and delusions.
