The argument claims that Federville Farms is the best choice for a summer camp for children and

encourages parents to send their children to it. In support of the argument, the author quotes the
results of a recent survey and states that the camp is very safe since it is family owned and operated
for over forty years and employs the most number of Red Cross certified lifeguards for any camp in
the state. While on the face of it, the argument seems reasonable and convincing, delving deeper
into it reveals certain assumptions and logical flaws.
Firstly, the author provides no details about the survey conducted, other than that it was recent, and
that Federville Farms ranked first in overall camper satisfaction and in food quality, and second in
variety of outdoor activities. The validity of conclusions drawn from the survey is questionable, since
the argument mentions neither the number of camps surveyed nor the number of campers from
each camp surveyed. If the sample size taken for either of these parameters is small, the results of
the survey lose credibility. Moreover, even if the survey is taken to be fully valid and credible, the
priorities for parents in sending their children may differ from the priorities from the camping
children who participated in the survey.
Secondly, the fact that Federville Farms has been family owned and operated for over forty years
does not directly imply children's safety. Besides, a number of other similar summer camps may also
be family owned and operated for such long periods, further bringing the supposed superiority of
Federville Farms in terms of child safety into question.
Finally, the argument that Federville Farms employs the most number of Red Cross certified
lifeguards for any camp in the state also does not conclusively prove that the camp is very safe for
children. In fact, this fact can be interpreted to prove the exact opposite to be the truth - that more
unsafe outdoor activities or a history of higher incidence of mishaps necessitate the large number of
lifeguards. Thus, this fact actually significantly weakens the argument.
Overall, the argument fails to persuade that Federville Farms is the best option for summer camps
and that parents should send their children there. It can be strengthened by providing details of the
survey conducted, and by proving that child safety is indeed implied by the two facts stated in
support of this claim.
