presentation about technical failure: Shaft vibration for vertical pump.

Process Sewer sump pumps: 140P-141

High vibration is a common problem for motors installed on top of vertical pumps.
Its source can stem from a mechanical issue with the pump, motor, or coupling.
The excessive vibration may have led to chronic premature failure the motor
bearings, discharge head stuffing box seal, and pump bowl bearings.

Causes of vibration:
1- Bushing, or bearing sleeve is worn-out (made of carbon Teflon).
2- Strainer was missing, which can be a cause for flow problems or allowing
foreign materials. In both cases, this directly affects the performance of the
pump.
3- Corrosion and erosion - improper selection of material for the pumpage.
Damage from corrosion or erosion may damage impellers or rings, leading to
a machine which vibrates beyond acceptable limits. Correcting the problem
may require analysis of the pumpage. Even in the case of severe erosion
from sand and grit, steps may be taken to change materials to eliminate the
problem or extend the MTBF
4- The shaft is thin and long (dimensions), which makes it prone for vibration
issues (Material?). These long, slender shafts that are susceptible to twisting
and bending
An alternative is to build the shaft from a rigid, Heavy Duty material (Material?),
but the cost would be high.

Possible causes of vibration:
1- unbalance, misalignment, or bent shafting is the cause.
2- electrical imbalance in the motor
3- The unit is operating at or near the resonance frequency
4- clogged impeller, worn bearings, worn rings
5- Uniform wear on bearings, uneven wear on shafts Shaft run-out caused by
bent shafts, shafts not butted in couplings, dirt or grease between shafts.

Process overview:
From v-60 (crude methanol surge drum) to methanol unit sump. P-141 pushes
from MeOH process sewer sump to surge pond. The sump is 5.44 meters deep.

Optional improvements:
1- Optional Bearings

steady bearings to meet service requirements...optional fluted rubber with rigid
shell, bronze, iron and (standard) carbon.

2- Rigid mounting will result in lower vibration levels.
3- Install dynamic absorbers, also known as vibration absorbers.
