Dear Ellington Elementary Parent/Guardian,

As we move through the summer, preparations are underway for an exciting academic year! Ellington Academy will provide your
son or daughter with many opportunities to grow academically, socially and artistically. Whether it be singing in a choir, exhibiting
artwork, performing a play, dancing on stage or telling the story of a newly discovered country!

Grand Rapids Ellington Academy is excited to offer grade levels Pre-K 10
th
grade for the 2014-2015 academic year. Ellington
Academy elementary will focus this year on communication and securing school culture. We appreciate your continued support
as you grow with us on this educational journey.

We would like to invite you and your student-artist to two events this August. There will be a Back to School Rally on
Saturday August 23
rd
from 2-5pm, right here on our very own campus! Come out and receive free food, backpacks,
school supplies, listen to music and have a great time. Bring a friend, family member or neighbor who may be interested in
enrolling at to one of our Ellington tables throughout the campus!

ORIENTATION on Wednesday, August 27
th
2014 from 4-7pm. It will be held in the auditorium. During orientation you will
have the opportunity to update all paperwork, order uniforms, meet your teacher, sign up for be BOLD program (after school
program), learn about the Parent Partners of Ellington (PPE) opportunities, listen to presentations from Mr. Ausua (Elementary
Principal), Ms. Johnston (Technology Director), Mr. Bowman (Security), and Ms. Hunter (Extended Learning Director). After the
presentations, there will be juice, coffee, and cookies served in the cafeteria as you fill out paperwork.

Things to note this year at Ellington Academy Elementary:
School will begin at 8:30am and will end at 3:50pm
Enhanced Literacy to include readers theatre, meta-logging & thinking maps
Enhanced Mathematics focus with new strategies on arts-integration
Time on Technology has increased (Ipads in K-2 & iMac lab use for 3-5)
Looping grades 1-2 & 3-4 (teachers will remain with their student for two years at a time)
Revamped Uniform, Truancy, and Behavior policies
Every Ellington elementary artist (K-5) will receive a semester in Dance, Theatre, Choir, PE with some classes
receiving Art as part of our regular electives as well
Mind Meets Music will continue to work with our K-2 artists
Michigan Reading Corp will work with our K-3 students
Strings Academy of Grand Rapids will partner with our district
Rising 5
th
Graders will go to camp Manitou-Lin with the YMCA for character development, team work and leadership
New GREAAT website with Elementary Weebly pages
One free uniform item per student (boys will receive a sweater vest/ girls a jumper)
Much much more!
