Read Aloud
Reading aloud to children provides them with a model of good reading. It
demonstrates that reading is important, pleasurable, and valued. Reading aloud bring
pleasure, however, it also provides children and adults with information. During read
alouds, children and the read can learning something new and can discuss the reading as
they go.
Reading aloud is the single most important thing an adult can do for a child. When
you read aloud to child, it helps them learn more words that they can add to their oral
vocabulary. Read alouds also helps children understand the meaning of words, build
phonics, familiarity with printed words. It also provides children with comprehension
practice.
I became aware of read alouds and the importance of pleasure reading before I even
knew how to speak. My mother reads for fun every chance that she gets. Her bedroom is
covered in over stuffed bookshelves. She has always tried her best to influence me to read.
As a young child, she read to my brother and me during the day and before bed. I have
always enjoyed listening to people read and share their favorite stories.
The book I am reading aloud is Llama Llama and the Bully Goat by Anna Dewdney. This
book addresses bullying. Llama Llama witnesses and falls victim to name-calling and teasing.
Dewdney shares Llama Llamas bully drama with just enough guidance on how to handle
and prevent bullying.
