Please respond to the following prompts: 1. Summarize the key points you learned from this Professional Development experience. How to speak to your class based on a common ground How to handle difficult children and why flip cards are not always the best way to discipline students. Why the culture of a school matters The importance of team planning, such as new ideas that you may not have thought of on your own.
2. Discuss how these key points connect to your content area. School culture starts from the top and works its way into every classroom. When teachers work and plan together, they often create lessons that take shape in a form that they never imagined possible. How you speak to your students can earn their respect and also let them know that they are important and that you care. Flip charts may work for some children, by most times the ones who are constantly flipping their cards become immune to the system and it no longer phases them. These children start to believe that they are bad kids and they need another form of support.
3. Share how you might use this new information in your future classroom. I will use the advice from this PD to create a positive, warm classroom environment. I will be creative and think about the discipline system that I use in my classroom and try to stay away from traditional flip charts or cards. I will also be open to team planning in the elementary setting and the special education setting. It is important to team plan with the general education teacher.
