Strategy Worksheet

Strategy #2

Strategy Name:

List-Group-Label

Brief Description (in your own words):

This strategy is an effective brainstorming tool that can be used for a many objectives. The
list-group-label strategy is most often utilized as a way for pupils to trigger and stimulate
background knowledge before starting a unit of study. It is also useful for reviewing words
and concepts after completing a unit. The finished List-Group-Label charts are useful in
providing the instructor with an assessment of where the students need instruction, and
also what they learned in the unit.

How you plan to use this strategy in your Practicum, Internship, Student Teaching, or
in your own classroom:

Before beginning a unit of study, such as Muscular Strength, students will promptly list all
words/phrases/names they would correlate or connect with the Muscular Strength.
After all the students have compiled their list of words, I would place them into small
groups. The groups will then combine their lists. The groups have to create categories,
which involve every word on their individual lists. This process builds background
knowledge for the topic. After all the words have been categorized, I then have the students
give each category a name (the Label part of the strategy). Then, as a class, we would create
word walls from their categories. I will put up bulletin boards and the students will draw
out their categories for the whole class to see. This process will help develop questions
students want answered during the study, and it will also help illuminate comprehension
about the topic at hand.
