begin a colony in North America

2. Sailed sixty miles up the James River and
established Jamestown

by 1608 only 34 still survived..
4. Governing Jamestown
a. The Virginia Company chose a council of
13 men to rule the settlement
1. Captain John Smith took
charge in order to save the colony;
he ordered forts and homes built

work, shall not eat.

Native Americans, specifically the
Powhatan Confederacy.

government

for the colony
