FEBRILE PEDIATRIC

Purpose: To initiate and expedite care from triage for all MEDcare patients based on
presenting symptoms and agreed upon guidelines.

MEDcare defines fever as 100.3 F or >
*If patient being seen for injury complaint-obtain a tympanic temperature.
*If patient being seen for acute illness-obtain rectal temperature for ages 2 or younger.
If older than 2, may take tympanically.

Common presenting symptoms sets include:

Chills
Body Aches
URI Symptoms
Urinary Symptoms
Abdominal Pain
Nausea/Vomiting
Back Pain

Procedure:

1. Swab patient for Strep and Flu in triage.
2. If age 4 or <, also obtain RSV swab.
3. Place patient in exam room.
4. Administer ONE antipyretic listed below based on weight:
Motrin/Ibuprofen 10mg/kg and if none given in the past 6 hours and if patient is 6
months of age or more
Tylenol/Acetaminophen 15mg/kg and if none given in the past 4 hours and if patient is
3 months of age or more
5. Monitor Vital Signs


Orders:
Strep
Flu
RSV
Antipyretic

Additional Considerations:
Mono, Sinus x-ray, CBC

Contraindications:
X-ray in pregnancy
Allergy to antipyretic
