RECTAL BLEEDING

Purpose: To initiate and expedite care from triage for all MEDcare patients based on
presenting symptoms and agreed upon guidelines.


Common presenting symptoms sets include:

Rectal pain
Rectal bleeding
Diarrhea
Abdominal Pain
Dark colored stools

Procedure:

1. Place patient in exam room and have undress to gown.
2. Initiate IV.
3. Draw CBC, BMP, & H Pylori.
4. Order Abdominal X-ray.
5. Anticipate hemoccult collection.
6. Obtain UA.
7. Order UPT in childbearing-age female.



Orders:
IV
CBC
BMP
H. Pylori
Abd X-ray
Hemoccult
UA
UPT

Additional Considerations:
If related to hemorrhoids, may treat pain

Contraindications:
X-ray in pregnancy
