Dear Parents,

During Unit 2, the major topic we will be studying is algebraic thinking. Our goal for this important
topic is for your child to be able to understand and master the following ideas:
Understand that multiplication equations can be used to compare two values
Consider how knowing factors, multiples and determining if a number is prime or composite
will build a deeper understanding of how to manipulate the number
Identify, articulate and represent numerical and geometric patterns
Represent growing patterns with words, pictures, and symbols
Identify relationships (rules) with numbers written in a line or chart
Solve for unknown quantities (variables) in equations and expressions
Identify if a number sentence is true or false

Thank you for being an active part of your childs fourth grade learning experience.

Grade 4 Mathematics: Unit 2
Vocabulary

division equal equation
expression factor growing pattern
multiple multiplication number patterns
prime product repeating pattern
Ways Parents Can Help
Ask students to explain how they see the
growth of patterns: How is the pattern
growing?
Give students a number sentence and ask
them to tell you if it is true or false. OR have
the students give you a number sentence and
ask you if it is true or false.
Some examples:
o 10 = 5 x 2 4 x 1 = 5
o 4 x 4 = 16 18 = 2 x 8
Ask students to tell you the multiples and/or
factors of a number. Follow-up by asking them
how they know they are correct?
Some examples
o Multiples of 12: 12, 24, 36, 48
o Im correct because 12 x 1 = 12, 12 x 2 =
24, 12 x 3 = 36 (Think - multiples, multiply)
o Factors of 12: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12
o Im correct because 1 x 12 = 12, 2 x 6 =
12, 3 x 4 = 12 (Think - factor x factor = product)
