Q: What is Reading Corps?

A: Reading Corps is a literacy program ofered by the Arlington Public Library. The goal of the program is to help children
who are struggling with reading grow to love to read while helping build the literacy skills that will help them succeed.
Q: How does Reading Corps work?
A: Students enrolled in Reading Corps will work with a volunteer Reading Buddy to help build skills and learn that reading
and learning are fun. Each Reading Buddy typically works one-on-one with students, but sometmes will work with a pair
of students if the class is very full.
Q: What skills or experience should I have to become a Reading Corps volunteer?
A: You do not need to have any previous experience tutoring to be a volunteer - we provide all of the training and
materials you need. You will be working with children between the age of 4 and 2nd grade, so having an interest in work-
ing with kids is a must. An interest in the feld of educaton is also a plus.
Q: What kind of tme commitment does Reading Corps take?
A: Reading Corps meets either once or twice a week, depending on the site. Each meetng lasts for one hour. Volunteers
must be at the site 15 minutes early to help prepare.
Q: Why volunteer with Reading Corps?
A: If you want to make a diference in the lives of others, Reading Corps is a great way to have a tangible impact on your
community. You will also acquire skills working in an educatonal setng that can help you grow professionally. If you are
looking for more experience working with children or volunteering, Reading Corps is a great way to build your knowledge
and hands on experience.
