DR-TA is a tool used to support and extend students reading and thinking about content. It helps youngster to activate prior knowledge through brainstorming, predicting the content that will be covered in the reading, and revisiting predictions for the purpose of confirmation or revision.
How you plan to use this strategy in your Practicum, Internship, Student Teaching, or in your own classroom:
This strategy is perfect for the Physical Education Setting. If I am teaching a section on stress management I will first as my students to 1.) Brainstorm. What words or ideas do they associate with the word stress? Then the students will 2.) Predict. They will flip through the text examining features of the chapter; titles, headlines, sub-titles, pictures, highlighted text, etc., and predict what they will read. Next the youngsters will 3.)Read. The students will take their predictions and questions into the reading of the chapter. The final step will be for the students to 4.) Discuss. After the chapter has been read, students revisit their predictions to see if they confirmed or revised their predictions. Their predictions might also need further reading.
