Topic: Disease
Multi-cellular organisms rely on coordinated and interdependent internal systems to respond to changes to their environment
Elaborations
investigating the response of the body to changes as a result of the presence of micro-organisms
Code
ACSSU175
They analyse how biological systems function and respond to external changes with reference to interdependencies, energy transfers
and flows of matter. They describe social and technological factors that have influenced scientific developments and predict how
future applications of science and technology may affect peoples lives.

10 Revision Vocabulary:
Infectious diseases: Can be transferred from one
organism to another. Diseases are caused by prions,
bacteria, viruses, protozoans, fungi, animals.
Non- infectious diseases. Diseases caused by:
Nutritional deficit or excess, metabolic issues, genetics,
cancers, ageing.
Pathogen:
Organism that invades your body and stops it working
properly.
Pathogenic agents: non-living causes of disease
Antigen: Chemicals that are not-part of the body that
come from pathogens or pathogenic agents
Host: The organism that a pathogen or pathogenic agent
attacks
Allergens: Substances that cause an abnormal reaction
of the body.
Prions: protein molecule that is infectious and causes
disease
Virus: Extremely small particle containing genetic
material that can grow and reproduce only inside living
things
Bacteria: Smallest life form found on earth.
Binary Fission: Reproduction by division of an organism,
usually single celled into two new organisms.
Parasites:
Organisms which do damage to the hosts they are
infecting for their own benefit.
https://www.ted.com/talks/ed_yong_suicidal_wasps_zom
bie_roaches_and_other_tales_of_parasites/transcript
Protozoans (malaria):
Single cellular organisms. Some cause disease.
Fungi (tinea):
Group of organisms, some are parasitic. Different from
plants, animals and bacteria. Include mushrooms and
yeast.
Worms: Group of organisms , some are parasitic. E.g
tapeworms. (note: ringworm is not a worm).
First line of Defence:
- Physical barriers
Designed to prevent the entry of invading pathogens.
(e.g skin, coughing, sneezing and nasal hairs)
- Chemical barriers
First line of Defence: Designed to prevent the entry of
invading pathogens (body fluids such as saliva, tears,
stomach acid).
Second Line
- Inflammation
Second line of defence: Increased blood flow to the
infected area, results in redness and swelling. Special
white blood cells called phagocytes move into the
damaged areas.
- Phagocytes
Phagocytes engulf and destroy foreign particles in the
body.
Third line
- Lymphatic system
Third line of defence: Body system of fluid containing
tubes that remove large molecules, particles and bacteria
from the body. Contain another type of white blood cells
called lymphocytes.
- lymphocytes
Produce chemicals caused antibodies.
- Antibodies
Chemicals that can deactivate certain antigens or tag
them for destruction.
- Antigens
Chemicals that are not-part of the body that come from
pathogens or pathogenic agents
Disinfectant: Chemical that kills microbes
Antiseptics: Mild chemical that prevents bacterial
growth.
