The staff at Benton realize that technology is increasingly becoming an everyday tool used in the various

classroom settings. In order to assure safe and effective use of portable technology, the following
guidelines have been set in place. Students who wish to use portable devices in the classroom must
read and sign the following contract along with their parent or guardian.
Students are expected to handle school property with respect. Students should not in any way modify
school portable devices. This includes but is not limited to changing settings on school devices;
modifying, adding or removing programs; physically altering devices.
Students are held solely responsible for the personal devices they bring to school. Personal devices are
only to be used during appropriate classroom activities. At all other times devices should be powered
down and stored in the student locker. Benton does not assume responsibility for lost, stolen, or
damaged personal devices.
Portable devices can be used in the classroom for approved academic activities. All other uses are
prohibited. Students are expected to follow teacher directions for specific activity guidelines. Students
who do not follow teacher guidelines may lose use privileges.
Students are not permitted to access the internet on portable devices outside of using the school WiFi.
This means no connection to 3G or 4G phone services. Texting and all forms of social media are
prohibited during the school day unless prior administrative approval has been granted.
When students are using portable devices in the classroom, devices must be out on the desk visible for
the teacher to see. Moving devices off of the desk can result in loss of use.
If the program, site, or activity uses sound, headphones or earbuds must be used.
As stated in the Prince William County Code of Behavior, students are not permitted to capture video or
photos without prior administrative permission.
Students are expected to follow guidelines set up in the Prince William County Acceptable Use and
Internet Safety Policy.

For minor infractions of these policies, teachers will use the three strikes rule. After three minor
misuses, students will no longer be permitted to use portable devices. Major infractions can lead to
immediate termination of portable device use and/or other corrective measures.
