English Literature and Media Studies BA, 2:1
This degree course introduced me to the major literary and cultural movements throughout the 20th century. I developed
two core areas of interest; gender and sexuality, and colonialism. I was interested in how minority cultures represented
themselves in the face of oppression, where the winners write the histories, and the oppressed scribble in the margins. This
developed into my dissertation on travel writing between the 19th and 21st centuries that discovered the changing attitudes
of difference through the representation of the Other in West Africa. As well as keeping to deadlines, this degree course
required group projects, presentations and developing efficient research and information finding skills.
