Homosexuality and Marriage: A Right of All

One man or one woman marrying a person of the same sex as them; this was
unimaginable just a decade ago, but now, the world is changing and same sex marriage
is and will become more frequent. Gay marriage has been one of the most controversial
subjects of all time. There are two sides to same sex marriage: those who think it should
stay illegal, and those who believe that it should become legal. The struggle for same-
sex marriage started all the way back in 1970 when same-sex couples started to seek
marriage licenses. Same Sex marriage is not outlawed in all religions as some people
believe. Homosexuals as a group are growing and are starting to gain their legal rights.
The group that thinks same sex marriage should be outlawed think this because
of three main reasons. One reasons is that same sex marriage has never been legal so
we should keep it the way it has always been. They also think that gay marriage should
be outlawed because it is against the bible and their religion. They argue that gay
marriage should be outlawed, but they also can get very violent. According to Lila
Shapiros article, 30 fatally violent hate crimes were committed against lesbian, gay,
bisexual or transgender victims. Actions like these are resembling those of the KKK
during the racial discrimination era. Groups get together to try to keep it illegal, one of
the biggest groups would be the christian group that don't believe in same sex marriage.
The bible says that same sex marriage should not be allowed in their religion. These
reasons, however, many people disagree with (Shapiro).
One of the biggest arguments on same sex marriage is that it is against the bible
and religions, but many people forget that their religion is not the only religion. Two

examples of religions that aren't against same sex marriage are Hinduism and Islam.
Both of these religions show homosexuality in their past. They had painting on their
walls of men with other men, which would be an example of homosexuality. So many
people paraphrase the Christian bible because it says that homosexuality is wrong, but
all in all, Christianity is not the only religion in the world so it should not be able to
dictate whether it is right or not.
When homosexuals first started to come out, one group had a problem with it;
the military. Not the military as a group disliked homosexuals, but the people that made
up the armies did not treat homosexuals as easily. People that joined that were
homosexual were afraid to admit it, thus they acted like something they weren't. Being
homosexuality was hated in the past of the military, but they are progressively getting
better at accepting those who chose to love the same sex. Just as our nation is starting
to accept it, so is the military; this is a huge step and freedom for every citizen (Ross 44-
53).
Homosexuals, in the past, were a very small group of people. People look at
homosexuals as individuals and the argue is over individual rights, but truly,
homosexuals are a group and should get group rights. Heterosexual couples are given
the right to marry one another because they are a group and that is their group right,
then why don't homosexuals get the same right, since after all they are a group also?
Both homosexual and heterosexual couples want the same thing: the right to marry their
companion. Heterosexuals are given this right but homosexuals are denied it. They are
both groups that believe in the same thing so why do they not get the same rights.
Whenever a group starts to become bigger, they gain more power and fight until they

get what they want. The homosexual group is growing at a rapid rate and they are
become stronger. They will fight until they get what they have been fighting for all these
years. When homosexuals first started to come out and people knew about their group,
they were afraid of them. They were not use to people that like the same sex in their
lives. They started to get use to it until the rumor that all homosexuals have AIDS came
out; which is not true, anyone can get it. Once that rumor came out everyone started to
be afraid of them again, but now people know that anyone can get it and people are
starting to accept homosexuals more. Since Obama has taken office, he is a supporter
of gay rights, many government officials have started to come out also (Williams 589-
595).
When homosexuals first started to come out, they had no rights at all. They are
progressively gaining more and more rights. Some of examples of these rights are: last
rites, tax benefits, and adoption. All of these reasons are giving gays more rights
because they can now have kids and they also get benefits from everything in their
lives. President Obama is one of the first presidents to support gay right. Since in office,
he has already had many states approve gay marriage, but his work hasn't stopped
there, he is still fighting for freedom to marry all over the United States (The Arc of the
Rainbow 3+).
All in all, homosexuals are the same as all other humans. they deserve to be
treated the same and have the same rights. The world has had an experience with a
challenge they have had to overcome before with racism, and they made it through that
fine. They will make it through the segregation of homosexuals, we all just have to
realize that we are all the same. Homosexuals, as a group, are growing and will get

what they have been fighting for. Starting back many years ago gay marriage was being
fought for, and still, today, they have not gotten full freedom. The United States of
America is a country of freedom, so homosexuals deserve to be free like the rest of the
country.
