Magazine Poetry Activity

PURPOSE: 1) To explore creativity with words and create special meaning with
few words; 2) To understand that poetry is a way of saying much or getting a
big message across -- but with few words. 3) To understand that not all poems
have to rhyme.
MATERIALS:
*Scrap paper and pencil for practicing diferent arrangements of words
and what your magazine poem will say BEFORE you paste it.
*About 15 random words cut out of magazines (Provide nouns, adjectives,
verbs, adverbs, etc. -- but not smaller words like noun markers, prepositions,
and conjunctions.)
*Glue stick
*Scissors (may be needed for cutting prefx and sufx of words)
*Small marker
*Piece of construction paper
*Summary page (provided) to explain the deeper meaning of poem
RULES & GUIDELINES:
LEARNING TARGET / GOAL: Using the random cut-out magazine words youve
been given, put together a poetic statement/saying that shows creative
use of words, great insight and/or profound meaning.
1) You may work in groups up to 4.
2) First, practice before you paste.
3) You MUST use at least 8 magazine words youve been given.
You may add prefxes or sufxes -- or cut of prefxes or
sufxes. (For example: un-, -s, -es, -ed, -ing, etc.)
4) You may trade (with teacher) up to 5 of the words youve been given,
but you must draw/select the new ones without looking.
5) You may use a maximum of 10 of your own words that you write
in between magazine words to make a statement that has meaning.
6) Add a title in quotation marks. (For the title, you may use magazine
words provided or write your own. The title does not have to count as part
of your 8 minimum magazine words or 10 maximum written-in words.)
7) Write each group members name on the back of the pasted poem
8) On the summary paper provided, write each group members name and
responsibility/job AND work together to write the deeper meaning summary
of your magazine poem in few complete sentences.
