Instructors Manual

Lesson 1

A. Write an overview of your plan of instruction and technology product by doing the
following:
1. Discuss the following elements of the plan and product: instructional goal, intended
audience, length, delivery approach, instructional sequence, materials needed
The instructional goal of my unit of instruction is to teach plumbers how to manage their
time. The specific goal is to help them submit a bid for typing to the office within 48 hours
of their trip to the customers location. The audience is a group of 12 plumbers, with an
average of close to 15 years plumbing experience. The length of the entire unit of
instruction is approximately eight hours of instruction and the delivery approach is a
combination of teacher-led and group work. The instructional sequence is:
1Whos in charge of your time?
2Timewhat is it and how do we manage it?
3Are you prepared?
4Time wasters
5Prioritizing
6Stress of NOT prioritizing
7Asking for help
8Bringing it all together
The materials needed are:
Can You Follow Directions? Worksheet, pencil for each participant, 1 per team for participation
activity of each of the following: tablet or smartphone to use with Google Hangout app,
blindfolds, envelopes with instructions labeled #1, and another one labeled #2, green circles on
a piece of paper (one for each team), red X on a piece of paper (only need 1), ability to access
an app on their phone or computer to track their time
2. Discuss each lesson or module in the plan of instruction.
1Whos in charge of your time? This lesson introduces them to the idea that it is
important to follow directions and shows them how not following directions can cost them
valuable time.
3. Discuss how student performance is assessed.
The post-assessment for unit 1 is a list of scenarios and the plumber is supposed to read
each scenario and decide whether or not it is a time management issue.

Lesson 1

B. Describe how the instruction (e.g., planned pedagogies, strategies) is to be delivered so
that its delivery could be re-created from your description.
Overview: 1Whos in charge of your time? This lesson introduces them to the idea that it
is important to follow directions and shows them how not following directions can cost them
valuable time. This is a whole group lesson.
Pre-instructional activity: Hand out a worksheet, facedown, and a pencil to each participant,
giving instruction that the paper is not to be turned over until I say so. Once all participants
have a worksheet and a pencil, explain that, when I say go they are to read the
instructions and begin. The goal is to complete the worksheet in 3 minutes. Ask if there
are, and answer any questions. Set a 3 minute timer and say go.
Walk around the conference room, quietly observing. Anyone who actually read the
instructions should be finished in about 45-60 seconds. Let the 3 minutes run out and say
pencils down. Discuss the instructions and why it is important to follow
instructions/directions. Ask for input as to why they didnt follow instructions if they didnt.
(Offer suggestions if no one can come up with anything: Perhaps you felt rushed because
you knew you only had 3 minutes? You saw your neighbor rushing to finish and you wanted
to try to get done as well? Etc.) You already knew you needed to read the instructions
carefully, but you probably felt like you needed to hurry because you only had 3 minutes. Why
is it important to work carefully? (if you dont work carefully while youre plumbing, what are
some of the potential consequencescall backs, more hours to do a job, etc.)
Content Presentation: Facilitate a discussion about the importance of following instructions.
Show MS Power Point presentation here (in resource website).
Learner Participation: Have everyone download Google Hangout App (in resource website).
While they are downloading app, assign partners, hand out an envelope to one partner in
each team. Tell them DO NOT OPEN envelope until instructed to do so. You will need to
have placed one green circle on the ground in random places outside for each team, with
one red X on the ground outside as well.
Post-assessment: Hand out and administrate the post-assessment (see website).
Follow-through activities: Have the plumbers download the link that is the appropriate one
for them to use for their device. Instruct them on how to use it throughout the week to
track what they are doing with the expectation that, during working hours, they are tracking
their activities every 15 minutes (should only take a few seconds each time they go to it to
track themselves).
C. Provide a list of all instructional materials (e.g., handouts, books, assessments,
manipulatives, videos) that are used in the lessons or modules.

Learner Participation activity, Assessment. Access the following items on the Links
needed page: Android Link, Apple Link, Google Hangout Link.

D. Provide a list of all physical resources needed in the instructional event (e.g., hardware,
lab equipment, calculators).
Timer, pencil for each participant, one paper with a green O on it for each team (every
two people participating), one paper with a red X on it, two envelopes per team, half
marked #1, the other half marked #2. The plumbers will each need their phone and the
ability to access Google Hangouts (if they dont have a phone that is capable of this, have
them bring their tablet that they use in the field).

E. Provide all lesson plans, assessments, and handouts that could be reproduced by those
who use your plan of instruction.
See Weebly website (www.silveradoplumbing.weebly.com)

Note: This could also include media-related documents (e.g., press releases, advertising,
announcements).

F. Include design elements that contribute to the purpose of the plan of instruction.
Ease of use of the Weebly website, appropriate content that the plumbers can relate to,
consistent navigation throughout the website, choice of images for use on the website (use
of water and above ground plumbing since Im working with plumbers)
