Breast Mastitis and Abscess

Definition:

Breast mastitis is an inflammation or infection on the breast tissue. It occurs commonly
on breast feeding women but may also occur in non-lactating women. Infection may occur
through transfer of micro-organisms through irritated or fissured nipples (nipple cracks and
abrasions). It may be caused by micro-organisms from the patients hands or from a breast fed
infant with an oral, eye or skin infection. If not treated, may lead to localized collection of pus
surrounded by the inflamed tissues of the breast or breast abscess.

Risk factors:
Delayed/ skipped breast feeding or pumping sessions
Milk stasis
Cracked or irritated nipples

Clinical signs:

Tough or doughy breasts
Dull to severe pain on infected region
Redness
Swelling
Tenderness
Fever
Chills
Body aches



Management:

Antibiotics for infection
Analgesics for pain and reduce inflammation
Local application of cold compress to relieve discomfort
Usage of snug bra
Perform personal hygiene carefully
Adequate rest and hydration
Observe for discharge of purulent material, serum, or blood

Note: If not treated, may lead to breast abscess

Treatment for lactational abscess:

aspiration of purulent matter with needle
Incision and drainage
