Welcome to Grade 10 Science! This course will help you to gain a deeper understanding of chemistry, biology, meteorology and physics as well
as an understanding of the interrelationships between science, technology and the environment. You will also be given opportunities to
increase your skills in scientific inquiry, including designing and performing experiments. Please read the following document paying close
attention to your responsibilities and how you will be evaluated. Good luck!

Textbook: The grade 10 science textbook is Nelson Science
Perspectives 10. The replacement cost of the textbook is $80.

Booklets: On a regular basis your teacher will use information and
worksheets that have been compiled into a complete booklet by the
Mackenzie Science Department. These booklets are available for
free download (see link below). You will be expected to come to
class with the appropriate pages from the booklets.

Assessment and Evaluation
The primary purpose of assessment and evaluation is to improve
student learning. Assessment can take on one of three forms
(described below). See page 31 of Growing Success for a detailed
description of assessment.

Diagnostic
Assessment FOR learning determines how learning
should proceed at the beginning of a unit.

Formative
Assessment AS learning provides feedback for a student
to determine where improvement is needed. An
example of this is homework.

Summative
Assessment OF learning evaluates what a student has
learned at the conclusion of a unit/course. An example
of this is a test or exam.

Evaluation of student achievement will be defined by four broad
Achievement Categories (described below). The category weighting
for semester work is shown.

Cheating/Plagiarism
Examples of plagiarism include copying or paraphrasing from a source (electronic or print) without acknowledging the source. Copying a fellow
classmates work is plagiarism. Any evaluation in which plagiarism/cheating is identified will receive a mark of zero. Please refer to student agenda
for further explanation and citation information.

Late and Missed Assignments

The Evaluation of Late and Missed Assignments
Students are responsible for completing and submitting work for evaluation on time. They are responsible for being aware of each due date and
the ultimate deadline which is the last opportunity to submit an assignment for evaluation.
Sufficient time and notice will be given for tests and for students to complete assignments. There are a number of strategies to be used to help
prevent and/or address late and missed assignments which may be employed by the teacher as outlined in Growing Success page 43. When a
number of strategies have been tried, marks may be deducted up to and including the full value of the assignment.

Missed Tests and Presentations
If a student is aware that they will miss a scheduled test/presentation they must advise the teacher ahead of time and an alternate arrangement
will be made between the student and teacher. On the day of the absence alternate arrangements will be made provided there is parental
notification to the office and the teacher that the test/presentation will be missed. Professional judgment will be used by the teacher in
determining the evaluation of missed tests and presentations.

A. SCIENTIFIC INVESTIGATION SKILLS AND CAREER EXPLORATION
(integrated throughout semester)
Throughout this course, students will:
demonstrate scientific investigation skills (related to both inquiry and
research) in the four areas of skills (initiating and planning, performing
and recording, analyzing and interpreting, and communicating);
identify and describe a variety of careers related to the fields of science
under study, and identify scientists, including Canadians, who have
made contributions to those fields.

B. BIOLOGY: TISSUES, ORGANS, AND SYSTEMS OF LIVING THINGS (5 weeks)
Big Ideas
Plants and animals, including humans, are
made of specialized cells, tissues, and organs
that are organized into systems.
Developments in medicine and medical
technology can have social and ethical
implications.

By the end of this course, students will:
evaluate the importance of medical and other technological
developments related to systems biology, and analyze their societal and
ethical implications;
investigate cell division, cell specialization, organs, and systems in
animals and plants, using research and inquiry skills, including various
laboratory techniques;
demonstrate an understanding of the hierarchical organization of cells,
from tissues, to organs, to systems in animals and plants.

C. CHEMISTRY: CHEMICAL REACTIONS (5 Weeks)
Big Ideas
Chemicals react with each other in predictable ways.
Chemical reactions may have a negative impact on
the environment, but they can also be used to
address environmental challenges.

By the end of this course, students will:
analyze a variety of safety and environmental issues associated with
chemical reactions, including the ways in which chemical reactions can
be applied to address environmental challenges;
investigate, through inquiry, the characteristics of chemical reactions;
demonstrate an understanding of the general principles of chemical
reactions, and various ways to represent them.

D. EARTH AND SPACE SCIENCE: CLIMATE CHANGE (3 Weeks)
Big Ideas
Earth's climate is dynamic and is the result of
interacting systems and processes.
Global climate change is influenced by both
natural and human factors.
Climate change affects living things and
natural systems in a variety of ways.
People have the responsibility to assess their
impact on climate change and to identify
effective courses of action to reduce this impact.

By the end of this course, students will:
analyze some of the effects of climate change around the world, and
assess the effectiveness of initiatives that attempt to address the issue
of climate change;
investigate various natural and human factors that influence Earth's
climate and climate change;
demonstrate an understanding of natural and human factors, including
the greenhouse effect, that influence Earth's climate and contribute to
climate change.

E. PHYSICS: LIGHT AND GEOMETRIC OPTICS (5 Weeks)
Big Ideas
Light has characteristics and
properties that can be
manipulated with mirrors and
lenses for a range of uses.
Society has benefited from the
development of a range of
optical devices and technologies.

By the end of this course, students will:
evaluate the effectiveness of technological devices and procedures
designed to make use of light, and assess their social benefits;
investigate, through inquiry, the properties of light, and predict its
behaviour, particularly with respect to reflection in plane and curved
mirrors and refraction in converging lenses;
demonstrate an understanding of various characteristics and properties
of light, particularly with respect to reflection in mirrors and reflection
and refraction in lenses.
