Part I and II
I. Watch 2 videos posted in e-learning about World without oil and A Crude Awakening - The
Oil crash. Make a critical review about it (<2 pages long).
II. Make a critical review about 2008 oil crisis from journal articles/bulletin and suggest ways to
prevent/prepare for the ill consequences in Malaysian context. Make sure all the articles cited are
properly listed in the reference section (5-10 pages).

Assignment 1 (PO1)
Part III
Based on 'ASPEN assignment' tutorials from the website,
1. Use ASPEN program to convert GC results into TBP, ASTM, EFV
2. Analyse and discuss the properties of the crude oil obtained from the program.

Assignment 2 (PO2):
1. Differentiate between simple distillation and fractionation by using illustrations
2. Watch the videos on distillation posted on the e-learning and make a critical review about it in
<1 page long.
3. Explain the differences between TBP, ASTM and EFV distillations
4. Use ASPEN program to perform a simple side-stripper distillation using TBP, ASTM and
EFV approaches
5. Compare your results in (3) and analyse

Assignment 3 (PO2, PO3, PO7, PO9, PO10, PO11):
1. Using Aspen plus and the technical information from the conference paper entitles Heat
balance of the vacuum distillation column key for identification of the reason for the low heavy
vacuum gas oil yield, simulate the mass and energy balance.
2. Discuss and comment the results from the conference paper.

Assignment 4 (PO2, PO3, PO7, PO8, PO9, PO10, PO11):
1. Read the journal article on Modern refinery concept
2. What are the major refinery processes to improve RON?
3. What is the effective technology for increasing RON without increasing octane content?
4. Explain the ring-opening reaction with a proper example. Which process is involved and why the
need for it?
5. Make a critical review on the article in <1 page long.
