The main colours used in this poster is grey, white

and black. Grey connotes ambiguity as it isnt

always clear what is being shown, white connotes
innocence which could represent the children who
are being possessed by the evil entity. Black
connotes darkness as well as boldness of a
certain antagonist in a film- represent the dark
entity. Gives away clue that this is a horror movie
trailer especially because of the face drawn on the
wall of the entity in black and white.
The main symbol that draws the audiences attention
straight away is the face of the antagonist of the film
which is the dark entity possessing the children.
Because it looks like it is drawn it looks like the work of
a child with a more sinister turn, especially as the
features are drawn in black. The audience can tell
straight away that it will involve this dark entity- the
symbols on the wall behind are hard to make out
however the wall connotes broken cracks which
represents the children being possessed. Because we
cant make out what the symbols are they are used to
scare the audience because it represents the unknown.
The main figures is the sketch of the evil entity (graphically
through the black and white sketching techniue! with the film
roll at the bottom of it relating to the videos which releases
the entity in the film and the child at the front of the poster-
although we are not shown the face of the child (represented
photographically! however we can see she is a young blonde
girl- conveys ambiguity within the movie of the "unknown.
The messages in the poster is primarily visual as
there is no taglines included on the poster. This
means that the messages are represented visually
through the child and the sketch on the cracked,
dirty wall- no words are needed as the images
e#press the horror- horror movies with children are
generally a higher rating because they create more
fear as they are stereotyped as being the innocent
and most vulnerable characters.
The intended audience is
horror movie fans who take
an interest in supernatural
horror movies especially.
$specially audiences who are
more attracted to the visual
than the verbal.
The techniues used are to shock the audience, as
there isnt a lot of content on this poster however the
content which is on there has been put there
specifically because it is so bare and dark. %rom there
not being a proper visual image of the entity and the
girls face is hidden there leaves ambiguity to the
audience which they will only find out if they go and
watch the film.
The genre conventions which are referred to is shocking the
audience visually with the images that they use on the poster,
however ensuring that they are not giving anything away about
the happenings within the film.
&%rom the producer of 'aranormal
(ctivity and )nsidious* as this will
attract fans who have watched these
other two horror movies and en+oyed
them.
There are no gratifications that are promised by the
poster however in the critics review it promises it will be
&genuinely terrifying, and it will scare the hell out of
you*. ,o taglines are used on this poster which is a
countertype to horror movie posters conventions.
(ttention is gained through shock and fear, as the
sketched face of the entity looks scary especially
alongside the blonde girl wiping her hands along
it.
The visual hierarchy presented through the poster
is that the figurers face in the middle of the poster
is the highest contrast to the young girl which the
audience then see because she is touching a part
of the sketch on the wall with her hand, so the
audiences perception shifts to the left side of the
poster.
)t is an effective poster because it promotes the film as
being a horror straight away because of the figure of
the faces entity. (s well as not giving too much away
(representative by the young girl whose face we can-
not see! so the audience have to go to the cinema in
order to watch the film to find out what happens. The
figured face is looking directly at the audience which
engages the audiences attention on the film. ) would
not say that there is any alternative readings which
might harm the message of the marketing campaign. )t
all is kept to the story of the film. The poster is not
offensive in any way, however people who do-not like
horror movies that include children will not like it.
The poster is a very important part of the whole marketing
campaign because it is what will be on bus billboards
around the cities which is where the producers can attract
more audiences who may not have heard of the film before.
The poster is the visual way of attracting audiences as it
gives them an insight into the film without showing them the
full trailer form.
