I. CONTEXTUAL FACTORS

MDD Standard

1. Community in which the school is located and/or serves, municipality
or owner and school factors:
UCSC is located in the city of Concepcin, Chile. This university receives
students from all Chile, it also receives students from different socioeconomic
status, most of the students that are studying in this university are beneficiaries
of scholarships that the state gives and also the university provides plenty of
scholarships, which help a lot to many families that do not have the resources.

1.1. How These Factors May Impact My Lessons:
This factors has an impact at the moment to plan our lessons, for example, we
should be conscious at the moment of demand to students to bring to the class
technological artefacts like computers, tablets, among others, because, not all
of them have access to those kind of elements. However, the university is made
up of several labs where students can make use of the computers in order to do
their homework or do any task required by teachers.

2. Student Characteristics and Their Instructional Implications:
According to our observations, we can appreciate that most of students are
motivated at the moment of learn a new language. This characteristic is very
helpful for the teacher because she/he can take advantage of this and use this
motivation tu create didactic tasks for make the process of learning a new
language more easier. In our observations we could observed that Miss
Valenzuela seems to be happy teaching in this section for the good attitude of
most of the students at the moment of showing motivation and compromise
with the subject.

2.1 Description of First Characteristic of Student(s) in this Class:
Students seems to be motivating of learning new aspects of the language, for
instance in our case we are observing a phonetic class, were most of the
students frequently are worried of make questions about pronunciation. If we
focus our attention to one student we appreciated that he participates a lot in
the class and demonstrate that he study before every class, because when the
teacher asks about previous class he always participate.

2.1.1 How This Characteristic Will Impact my Lesson:
The characteristics mentioned before will have a positive impact in our
lessons, because if the student show that he is doing an independent work it would be
easier for us to continue teaching him new content instead of be stuck in the same
topic of the previous class. Besides, the motivation of the student is crucial, because if
the student is motivated he is going to have a good disposition in the learning process.

2.2 Description of Second Characteristic of Students in this Class:
In consecuence of the first characteristic, also we found that most of the
students are very responsable. In every class students must demonstrate that
they are studying for their own (the autonomos work), for example at the
beginning of every class teacher asks to students to review what they saw the
previous class, and students at random or voluntarily mention what they did
last class.





2.2.1 How This Characteristic Will Impact my Lesson:
In a positive way too, because this show if students understood what they saw
the previous lesson, also it is very helpful to improve their fluency, pronunciation and
how they organize their own ideas. Teacher can advance with the next step after
confirm if most of the students did the homework and understand the last class and
now can continue with the next one.


3. Physical Aspects of the Classroom and Their Instructional Implications:
One of the most important aspects is the classroom is the data, this
technological implement is very helpful for the teacher at the moment of
teaching. The location is crucial, because the idea is that all students can see
the images that data project. Also, the speakers are very important in order
that students can hear in an apropiate way a listening activity to finally achieve
the goal succesfully.

3.1 Description of First Physical Aspect:
In the classroom the chairs are organized in a semi-circle all the time, so
students can look each other and the front of the class to see the teacher to the face
meanwhile she moves around the classroom.

3.1.1 How This Aspect Will Impact My Lesson:
This is beneficent to the teacher, because she can observe the faces of
all the students and they can look at the whiteboard clearly. Furthermore, we as
obervers, we had the oportunity to interact with the students, so we could
experiment how organization makes more easy the process of checking if
students are working or cheking the possible doubts that they could have.
Beside this, this organization of the classroom is practical for the teacher to
notices if students are paying attention or they are doing other things.

3.2 Description of Second Physical Aspect:
A second physical aspect that could be detrimental is the fact that the classroom is
near to a free space where other students make a lot of noise and also, big part of the
classroom is made of glass and all the time people pass outside.


3.2.1How This Aspect Will Impact My Lesson:
What was mentioned before is a negative aspect, because it may distract the
students during the lesson and actually, the students sometimes can hear clearly. As
we know, students are L2 learners so they dont know English properly, because of this
they may lost the main idea if they cannot hear perfectly.


3. Reflects on the importance of knowing about students and the context to
provide quality teaching





The fact that the university provides many technological devices to students
simplify their learning process, for example if they need to read or to search for
something on internet the easily can go to the labs and work there.
